Gregory Nicotero
Gregory "Greg" Nicotero (born March 15, 1963 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania , United States ) is an American makeup artist , film director , film producer , screenwriter , stunt performer , actor and expert in special effects and visual effects . He is a four-time Emmy and, since 2006, the British Academy Film Award winner, which received the awards in the fields of make-up, visual effects and screenplay. In addition, Nicotero was nominated thirteen times for the Saturn Award and won it three times. In 2004 he was nominated for the first time for the Satellite Award in the category Best Visual Effects.
Nicotero took part in around 200 film and television productions. At the beginning of his career he was mainly active in the horror genre , but after a few years of experience he was involved in almost all areas of film art. He also works repeatedly under the leadership of famous directors such as Steven Spielberg , Quentin Tarantino , Frank Darabont , Wolfgang Petersen or M. Night Shyamalan .
Life
Childhood and youth
Gregory Nicotero was born in Pittsburgh. His interest in film and television was sparked by Steven Spielberg's film Jaws. After other films like The Exorcist , Planet of the Apes and Dawn of the Dead , he showed more and more enthusiasm for the film industry, especially for working behind the camera. Through his uncle Sam, who is an actor in Pittsburgh, he met the director George A. Romero . Romero made him a job offer for his film Creepshow . But the then 16-year-old Nicotero turned it down because he wanted to finish his schooling in order to eventually become a doctor. In 1984 Romero contacted him again to win him over for the sequel to Dawn of the Dead . This time Nicotero accepted, which started his career in the film industry.
Film career
Nicotero began his career in his native Pittsburgh. Here he was under the wing of Tom Savini , who taught him the craft of make-up and special effects. In 1985, Greg finally made his debut in the movie Zombie 2 , where he served Savini as an assistant and had a small supporting role.
In the same year he met the makeup artist Howard Berger and the special effects artist Robert Kurtzman know. With the two of them he founded the special FX company KNB EFX Group in 1988 . The first letters of the three artists make up the abbreviation "KNB". Since then, the company has worked on many different film and television projects. At the 2006 Academy Awards , it received the Oscar for Best Make-up for The Chronicles of Narnia: The King of Narnia . 2013 followed another nomination for the film Hitchcock .
After the film Zombie 2 , Nicotero acted as a make-up assistant a few times, as in the films Invasion USA (1985) and The Monkey in Man (1988). After that he was mainly responsible for the project. In 1985 Nicotero was responsible for the special effects of a TV series for the first time, a year later he worked for the first time in a feature film as a special effects artist. After the horror film From Beyond - Aliens of Horror , Gregory worked in many subsequent films as a make-up artist and special effects manager, including in Tanz der Teufel II , Creepshow 2 , Das Böse II and Nightmare on Elm Street 5 - Das Trauma in the 80s as a double responsible. He also made his debut as a stuntman in the film From Dusk Till Dawn in 1996 . However, he has never performed this activity again to this day. At the turn of the millennium, Nicotero took part in nine different film projects. In that single year, for example, he was on Mission to Mars (make-up), I only dismantled my wife (make-up), The Cell (make-up) and Der Wüstenplanet (special effects); for the latter he won the Emmy Award for the first time . Since then he has acted in the film industry to a similar extent every year. In 2006 he received the BAFTA and Saturn Awards in the Best Mask category for his work in The Chronicles of Narnia: The King of Narnia . In 2007 he made his debut in the field of visual effects in the film Der Nebel, directed by Frank Darabont . In 2010 he worked again as a visual effects artist in Duel der Magier . In the same year he worked on the television series The Pacific , produced by Steven Spielberg , for which Nicotero was awarded the Emmy in the category Best Make-up in 2010. Before that, he was responsible for the masks and special effects in Inglourious Basterds in 2009 .
Nicotero has been a make-up artist and special effects artist on the popular television series The Walking Dead since 2010 and has been executive producer since 2011 . In the first, third, sixth and seventh season he played in five episodes as a mutated zombie; he also served Frank Darabont as assistant director in the first season and has also been the primary director since the second season. For his work on The Walking Dead, he was nominated seven times for the Emmy and won it twice. He also wrote the scripts and directed the series' web episodes.
In recent years Nicotero has worked on several film sets, for example in the adventure film The Gray in 2011 , where he was responsible for the masks and special effects. He was also involved in the TV series Torchwood and Breaking Bad as well as in the drama Water for the Elephants in 2011 and in the biography of Alfred Hitchcock in 2012 . In 2012 Greg designed the make-up for the Oscar and Golden Globe Award winning Western Django Unchained , directed by Quentin Tarantino . Private
Greg Nicotero is married to the assistant director Shari Nicotero, with her he has a son and a daughter. He lives with his family in Los Angeles , where he moved back in the 1980s. His uncle is the actor Sam Nicotero, who starred in the films My Bloody Valentine 3D , The Mothman Prophecies and Jimmy Hoffa , among others . In addition, Nicotero has been an enthusiastic guitarist for years.
