List of rose varieties

The rose variety 'Theano' is a pink-colored, single-flowering rose that was bred by Rudolf Geschwind in the Slovakian carp before 1895 . The rose variety comes from a hardy Rosa californica and the red multiflora hybrid 'Crimson Rambler' grown in Japan . In 1895, Johann Christoph Schmidt introduced the rose to the German market under the name 'Theano', which is why it is occasionally described in older German literature as a breed by Johann Christoph Schmidt.

In the past, the synonym Rosa californica 'Plena' was used for the rose . However, recent studies have shown that there are two different rose varieties bred by Rudolf Geschwind.

The tall rose 'Theano' forms a strong, compact shrub. The rose plant is about 220 cm to a maximum of 350 cm high and 150 to 200 cm wide. The pink flowers, arranged in clusters of up to 50 individual flowers, with a light pink to cream-colored center are formed from 8 to 16, slightly wavy, heart-shaped petals . They form a small, about 5 cm large, loosely filled rose petal. The pointed, dark pink to purple-colored rose buds later open to form a flat, half-double flower, in the middle of which the bright yellow stamens become visible. The flowers of the rose variety 'Theano' are odorless.

The rose variety has small, elongated to egg-shaped, finely toothed leaves . The dull foliage appears light green on long, curved shoots that are covered with numerous greenish to reddish-brown spines .

The rose variety that blooms once is extremely hardy ( USDA climatic zone 6b to 9b). It blooms for a long time in the early summer months and is resistant to the well-known rose diseases .

The rose 'Theano' thrives in well-drained soil, preferably in sunny locations on slightly acidic to slightly alkaline soils. The rose is often grown as a climbing rose. It is suitable for planting near-natural gardens and cottage gardens as well as for background planting of flower borders . This robust rose variety can also be planted as an attractive hedge or as a windbreak. It can be combined well in the garden with tall grasses , shrubs and woody plants such as delphinium , phlox , clematis and lonicera . The 'Theano' is also suitable for planting columns, rose arches and walls in formal gardens .

For loosely bound, naturalistic bouquets of flowers, the rose is mostly used in combination with other wild and rambler roses due to its abundance of flowers .

The rose variety is found in many rosariums and historical gardens, including the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden (California), the Arboretum Borova hora (Slovakia), the Rosarium in Doblhoffpark (Baden, Austria), the Rosarium Petrović (Serbia), and the Rose Park Reinhausen (Lower Saxony), in the old Erndtebrück cemetery and in the Rosenpark in Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe (Hesse).

Naming

The rose was named after the ancient figure Theano , a Pythagorean woman who is often referred to as the wife of the philosopher Pythagoras of Samos . Theano was considered the embodiment of female virtue in the Roman Empire .
