The trained electrician Klöckner came in 1954 from Mülheimer SV 07 to VfB Speldorf , the club of the former national goalkeeper and later honorary chairman of this Mülheim club, Fritz Buchloh . With the club he reached the final of the German Amateur Championship on June 24, 1956, but it was lost 3-2 to Spvgg. 03 Neu-Isenburg . In the final, he was seriously injured by a broken fibula after brutal attacks by his opponent in the early stages, but despite the handicap, he achieved the interim 2-2 equalization; Substitutions were not allowed at the time.

For the 1956/57 season he moved to Schwarz-Weiß Essen , with the club he had his greatest success in 1959 - winning the DFB Cup . In the 5-2 win over Borussia Neunkirchen , he scored the goal to make it 3-0 in the 66th minute. With Schwarz-Weiß Essen he rose at the end of his premier season in the senior division in the 2. Oberliga West and for the 1958/59 season on, 1959/60 from and 1960/61 again - and for two seasons - again. During his club membership he played 102 point games in the Oberliga West , in which he scored 28 goals.

Since his club was not considered for the Bundesliga for the 1963/64 season , he moved to Werder Bremen at the start of the new uniform top division . He crowned his debut on August 24, 1963 (1st matchday) in a 3-2 win at home against Borussia Dortmund with his first goal, the 3-1 goal in the 50th minute. After he had been used in 14 of 30 point games and had scored four goals, he came in the following season to 17 missions, in which he also scored four goals. Coach Willi Multhaup leads him and his team to win the title at the end of the season.

For the 1965/66 season he returned to the Uhlenkrug and played for Black and White Essen in the second-rate Regionalliga West . As the runner-up of the following season qualified for the promotion round to the Bundesliga , he played all eight group games in which he scored four goals, but missed promotion with his team behind Borussia Neunkirchen very narrowly.

He ended his football career after two seasons with VfB Speldorf in the third-class Niederrhein regional league and in 1969, under the later Uerdingen Bundesliga coach Klaus Quinkert, contributed to the promotion to the highest amateur class, the Niederrhein association league .
