Theodor Krancke (building officer)

Theodor Krancke (born February 18, 1820 in Hanover , † January 28, 1897 in Berlin ) was a German railway civil engineer and Hanoverian and Prussian construction officer . Krancke played a major role in the expansion of the Hanoverian railway network, then worked almost exclusively in railway operations in Bremen and Magdeburg, until his sphere of activity in Berlin brought him closer to building activity again.

Life

Theodor Krancke received his education first at the Lyceum and later at the Polytechnic School in Hanover .

In 1840 he was appointed building manager in Hanover . In this position he built the Chain Bridge in Hameln . After the successful completion of the construction, the city of Mannheim entrusted him with the construction of the local chain bridge, one of the first structures of this type in Germany alongside the Hamelin Bridge . He then switched to the service of the Royal Hanover State Railways as an engineer , where, among other things, he carried out the construction of the Leine bridges near Herrenhausen and was involved in the construction of the Hanover Southern Railway . In 1854 he was appointed operations inspector in 1854 and operations director in Göttingen in 1856, and as such was transferred to Bremen in 1864. In 1861, before the annexation of Hanover in 1866, Krancke transferred to the Prussian civil service. But he left this again in 1862 to move to Magdeburg as operations director and member of the board of directors of the Magdeburg-Leipzig Railway Company .

The company was nationalized in 1880 and Krancke rejoined the Prussian civil service as a government and building officer . Just one year later he was promoted to senior building officer and conductor of the III. Department transferred to the Royal Railway Directorate in Berlin . From 1885 he was the president's representative there . In the course of the reorganization of the state railway administration, he was made available on April 1, 1895 as a secret construction officer.

Krancke worked extensively in his private life. So he was active in the Hanoverian artists' association, where he sang with a bass voice. He maintained closer relationships with Heinrich Marschner , Ignaz Lachner , August Wilhelm Otto Niemann and Theodor Wachtel . He was temporarily chairman of the Magdeburg Architects and Engineers Association , where he particularly encouraged the younger members to achieve scientific or social achievements. Later he was extensively active in the executive committee of the Association of German Railway Administrations . In Berlin, the morning stroll through the zoo became a fixed habit that he retained into old age. Theodor Krancke died on January 28, 1897 after a long illness with his family.

Awards

Theodor Krancke became the Prussian Red Eagle Order III. Class with the ribbon and the Prussian Order of the Crown II. Class awarded.
