Theodor Scherer (born September 17, 1889 in Höchstädt an der Donau , † May 17, 1951 in Ludwigsburg ) was a German officer , most recently lieutenant general in World War II .

Life

Scherer began his military career on July 14, 1908 as a flagjunker in the 12th Infantry Regiment "Prince Arnulf" of the Bavarian Army . In 1910 he attended war school and was subsequently promoted to lieutenant . He served on the Western Front during World War I and was taken prisoner by the British there in 1915 . At the end of 1918, after the Compiègne armistice , he was released from internment .

After the war he resigned from military service on August 30, 1920 in the wake of the terms of the Versailles Treaty and the resulting reduction in the army and joined the police service of the Bavarian State Police . In 1935 he was a lieutenant colonel in the police force and was accepted into the armed forces . As a lieutenant colonel, he was in command of the 56th Infantry Regiment. On January 1, 1937, he was promoted to colonel . From June 13 to September 15, 1940 he was in command of the 507th Infantry Regiment. In 1940 Scherer took part in the campaign in the west . From March 4 to September 25, 1941, he served as the commander of the Führer Headquarters . On October 1, 1941, he was appointed commander of the 281st Security Division . The security division operated behind its own front to prevent attacks by partisans or scattered units of the Red Army.

From January 1942, Scherer led the battle for Cholm as commander of the fortress Cholm against the German cauldrons enclosed by Soviet units. For his successful defense he received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross .

In the further course of the war, Scherer commanded the 34th Infantry Division from September 5, 1942, and the 83rd Infantry Division on the Eastern Front from November 2, 1942 to March 1, 1944 . On April 15, 1944, Scherer was appointed inspector of the coastal defense of the military administration for the Reichskommissariat Ostland .

Scherer had a fatal accident in a car accident near Ludwigsburg in 1951 .
