Third / Sister Lovers is the third studio album by the American rock band Big Star . Although it is basically a solo album by singer-songwriter Alex Chilton , it is considered a regular album by the group, which at the time of recording only consisted of Chilton and drummer Jody Stephens. Completed in 1975 and pressed on vinyl as a test , the album was not released until 1978 under the title 3rd or Third on the PVC Records label. In 1985 it was reissued under the title Sister Lovers . After the re-release in 1992 by Rykodisc as Third / Sister Lovers , the album is now known under the compound title. It is also known as Big Star's "legendary third album". It was produced by Jim Dickinson at Ardent Studios in Memphis .

History and style of music

Big Star was founded in 1971 by the two singers and songwriters Alex Chilton (previously with the Box Tops ) and Chris Bell . Together with drummer Jody Stephens and bassist Andy Hummel, the band played melodic guitar pop in the style of the Byrds and British bands such as the Beatles and The Who . Stylistically, they were in contrast to Progressive Rock, which was much more successful at the time . As a result, the band, which had been traded as a kind of supergroup , was much less successful with their first two albums than had been hoped for.

Chris Bell left the band in 1972 because of internal disputes during the recording of the second album Radio City . Andy Hummel also dropped out early. The temporary sale of Ardent Studios by its founder John Fry, who had significantly supported the band, and difficulties with his record company Stax Records , which had no experience with white pop music, were added. The “blue-eyed soul prodigy” Chilton was now in charge of the band, which basically only consisted of him and Jody Stephens. He was also the composer of all titles except Lou Reeds Femme Fatale . The boxes of the studio's original tapes are labeled Jody & Al Project , and Ardents sound engineer Larry Nix only mentions Chilton in the notes . Chilton was suffering from severe alcohol and drug problems at the time . This shaped the recordings and the mood of the album significantly. The recordings took place in the second half of 1974, the mastering took place in February 1975. By this time Big Star had already disbanded. The record company Stax Records did not release the last album "... because of a lack of prospects of success ..." at first. It was not until 1978 that the album appeared on the indie label PVC Records under the title 3rd or Third . Bruno Jaschke wrote that the album “looks like it was made by someone who has his back to the wall, but doesn't really care anymore. [...] A depression grows in the contents, which musically finds almost plastic images like in 'Holocaust', where powerlessness, slow-motion pace and a dissonant guitar that sounds otherworldly combine to create morbid grave peace. "

Because of its complicated history was Third / Sister Lovers repeatedly with the unfinished album Smile of the Beach Boys compared.

Later success of the album

Even four years after the recordings and the first release, the album was “still way ahead of its time”. It "... is fragile as well as dynamic and disturbing music that Chilton [...] presented as a friendly cynic and pale apocalyptic." In the mid-1980s, bands like REM , The Bangles , Violent Femmes and the Replacements , which were declared fans of Big, did Star were whose names popularized again. So it came in 1992 under the title Sister Lovers at Rykodisc under the direction of Jim Dickinson and the use of additional titles from the recording sessions to a first re-release of the album, which claims to be the closest to the original intentions. A comeback for Alex Chilton, who died in New Orleans in 2010 , was initiated. On the 4-CD box Keep An Eye On The Sky from 2009 (released by Rhino Records ) all studio and demo recordings of the band and thus also of the album Third / Sister Lovers are documented. In 2016 the label Omnivore Recordings released the restoration of the recording sessions of the third album on three CDs as Complete Third .

With Complete Third , the independent label Omnivore Recordings released a three-part compilation of all the recordings made during the production of Third in 1974, including previously unreleased demo recordings and alternative takes . For example, Complete Third contains a version of The Velvet Undergrounds After Hours sung by Lesa Aldridge and a take of For You with vocals by Alex Chilton (the album version was sung by songwriter Jody Stephens).

The complete edition contains 69 songs on 3 CDs with the titles Vol. 1: Demos to Sessions to Roughs , Vol. 2: Roughs to Mixes and Vol. 3: Final Masters . In October 2016, February 2017 and May 2017 the three parts were released separately as a double album on LP .

The new publication received very positive reviews from the trade press. Rolling Stone magazine selected Complete Third as 6th of the 10 best reissues of 2016. The Guardian praised the box set as the “definitive version” of a “cult masterpiece” and awarded it the highest rating of five stars. Allmusic and All About Jazz rated Complete Third with 4.5 out of 5 stars. Pitchfork Media awarded 9.5 out of 10 points.
