Thomas Büchner (born September 22, 1934 in Berlin ; † August 5, 2016 in Münster ) was a German hematologist and oncologist and professor at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster.

Life

Büchner grew up in Freiburg im Breisgau and, after graduating from high school in 1955, began studying human medicine at the Albert Ludwigs University there . After interim stays in Vienna , Innsbruck and Munich , he obtained his doctorate after the medical state examination in Freiburg in 1961 on the subject of "Autoradiographic investigations on cell kinetics in mice". He then moved to the Münster University Hospital , where he worked from then until his retirement. In 1971 he received his habilitation on the subject of "Inflammatory cells in blood and tissue: study of experimental granulating inflammation caused by foreign bodies and wound healing", for which he received the Theodor Frerichs Prize of the German Society for Internal Medicine in the same year . In the same year he was appointed professor for "Internal Medicine and Hematology" at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster. In 1999 Büchner retired. Büchner died on August 5, 2016 in Münster.

Act

In his clinical and scientific work, Büchner mainly dealt with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and in 1978 became chairman of the “AML Cooperative Group” (AMLCG), which carried out the first multicenter study on AML. As a result, the “TAD” therapy scheme (consisting of tioguanine , AraC and daunorubicin ), which is still partially used today , was established. Since 1976 he had been head of the laboratory for special hematology at the University Hospital Münster, and in 1993 he was also appointed head of the leukemia research department at the Westphalian Wilhelms University. For further networking and advanced training, Büchner founded the symposium “Acute Leukemias” together with the Münster pediatrician Günther Schellong (1926–2015), which was also of great international importance. In this sense he was also decisively involved in the development of the "European Leukemia Net", a project funded by the European Union to network leukemia researchers.

Büchner was a member of all leading specialist societies in his field of activity (including the American Society of Hematology , the American Association for Cancer Research and the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology) and executive chairman of the "Association for Leukemia Research and Therapy eV".

Awards

  • 1980: Honorary member of the German Society for Hematology and Medical Oncology

Trivia

Büchner became internationally known outside of professional circles through the treatment of Raissa Maximowna Gorbacheva (1932-1999), the wife of Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev , who was ill with megakaryocyte leukemia, a special form of AML, and finally on September 20, 1999 in Münster passed away.
