Thomas Herbst (painter)
Thomas Ludwig Herbst (born July 27, 1848 in Hamburg ; † January 19, 1915 there ) was a German impressionist painter and a founding member of the Hamburg Art Club .
life and work
In 1865, Herbst took lessons from Jacob Becker at the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt am Main. A year later he began studying at the Academy of Arts in Berlin with Carl Steffeck . In 1868 he studied with his friend Max Liebermann at the Weimar Academy under Charles Verlat . From 1873 to 1876 he lived in Düsseldorf and traveled to Holland from there. In 1876/1877 he lived in Paris with Max Liebermann and stayed in Munich in 1878 for study purposes. There he got in touch with the Munich Secession and Wilhelm Leibl .
From 1884 Herbst lived in Hamburg again and had his studio in St. Georg; he worked as a drawing teacher at the "trade school for women". In 1890 he undertook painting studies with Carl Rodeck . In 1897 he was a founding member of the Hamburg Artists' Club, from which he resigned in 1903 because of the admission of Arthur Siebelist's students , whose "cultural level" he did not appreciate. He was also a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 . In 1906 he went on a study trip with Friedrich Ahlers-Hestermann through Holstein.
Thomas Herbst died in Hamburg on January 19, 1915. In popular parlance and also in artistic circles it is called "cow autumn" because he often chose cows as motifs. His paintings are exhibited in the Hamburger Kunsthalle , the Altonaer Museum , Schloss Gottorf , the Landesmuseum Oldenburg , the Kunsthalle Kiel and the Alte Nationalgalerie .
In 1927 the Herbstweg in Hamburg-Barmbek-Nord was named after him. In the Ohlsdorf cemetery , in the area of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery , near the main entrance of the cemetery, the graphic artist and painter, among others, is reminded of Thomas Herbst on the double collective grave, whose name is on the painter's grave plate on the right.
On the occasion of the 100th year of death in 2015, Hamburg's Jenisch-Haus dedicated an exhibition to the artist.
On December 9, 2018, an episode of NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann and filmed in the Kupferstichkabinett of the Hamburger Kunsthalle. In it, a previously unknown, unsigned oil study of two children, which was painted by Thomas Herbst and in the new edition of his, was discussed with the director of the 19th century gallery of the Hamburg art gallery Markus Bertsch and Christoph H. Seibt of the Gesellschaft der Freunde Thomas Herbsts Works directory is included.
