Tilmann D. Mark

Tilmann D. Märk (born April 29, 1944 in Seefeld in Tirol ) is an Austrian physicist . He has been rector of the University of Innsbruck since 2011 .

Life

Tilmann Märk studied physics and physiology at the University of Innsbruck from 1962 to 1968 and was awarded a Dr. phil. PhD. From 1968 to 1969 he was a research assistant at the Institute for Atomic Physics at the University of Innsbruck. From 1969 to 1971 Märk worked as a Max Kade Research Fellow at the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, USA. He then worked as a university assistant at the Innsbruck Institute for Atomic Physics until 1980. During this time, Märk completed his habilitation in “Experimental Atomic Physics”. After a stay abroad as Senior Visiting CIRES Fellow and Fulbright Scholar at the Department of Chemistry at the University of Colorado in Boulder , USA, he was appointed Associate Professor at the Institute for Experimental Physics at the University of Innsbruck in 1980.

In 1987 he became a university professor at the Institute for Ion Physics at the University of Innsbruck, of which he was director from 1993 to 2006. He had turned down calls to the University of Graz and the University of Greifswald . Märk has been an associate professor at the Institute for Plasma Physics at the University of Bratislava since 1987 .

On April 21, 2011 he took over the post of Rector from Karlheinz Töchterle , who became Minister of Science, on an interim basis, before he was elected Rector on December 13. In January 2019 he was appointed by the University Council for a third term of office as Rector of the University of Innsbruck from 2020 to 2024.

He is married and has one son.

Act

Tilmann Märk's main research areas are the physics and chemistry of clusters and plasmas , mass spectrometry , electron and ion physics, radiation physics, bio and environmental physics and food science. He has written over 650 scientific articles in refereed journals, which have been cited over 10,000 times by colleagues to date. As a visiting professor, Märk worked at Penn State University , Pennsylvania, USA, the University of Konstanz and the University of Belgrade , among others . He is co-editor of the "International Journal of Mass Spectrometry", "Articles about Plasma Physics" and the "Acta Physics Universitatis Comenianae". Tilmann Märk is a co-founder of the two spin-off companies Ionicon Analytics and Ionimed Analytics. He has also been a member of the board of directors of the Italian food company Zuegg AG since 1977 and board member of the University of Innsbruck Beteiligungs Gesellschaft mbH since 2008.

Tilmann Märk has received numerous awards for his achievements. He is honorary doctor of the University of Lyon and the University of Bratislava , holder of the Golden Medal of Honor of the University of Bratislava and the Heyrovský Medal of the Czech Academy of Sciences and has also received the Erwin Schrödinger Prize of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 2008 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In 2014 he was awarded the Great Gold Medal of Honor for Services to the Republic of Austria .

In 2016 he was awarded the Decoration of Honor of the State of Tyrol .

In 2018 he was awarded the Dissociative Electron Attachment Club Distinguished Service Award .
