The Tilse (tilszus = swampy; Russian тыльжа ) is a 27 km long river in the former East Prussia , which flows into the Memel in Sovetsk . The former Tilsit is named after her.

Name and course

According to older traditions, the Tilsot or Tilsete river is mentioned in the reports of the Teutonic Order . The Lithuanians who immigrated in the 15th and 16th centuries turned it into Tilszele , which was popularly preserved.

Headwaters

The source of the Tilse is located in the southern part of the former Ragnit district , 5 km away from the Vishnevoye railway station on the Chernyakhovsk – Sovetsk railway line (Sovetsk - Shilino - Kalushskoye - Chernyakhovsk - Kaliningrad ). In a grove formed by alders , birches and spruces near Bolshevo (Meldienen) - Koschelewo , some streams flow together to form the Tilse River.

Run

It flows relatively quickly in the stony river bed in which large boulders lie near Pokrovskoye . There, already 1.5 m wide, the Tilse is bridged by the road Schilino- Uljanowo . Turning northwards from here, it passes Michailowka , (Balandszen), Rudakowo , (Podszuhnen), (Luganskoje), Iskra , Gudkowo , Rakitino , Wetrowo , (Moritzkehmen) and Tilsit-Kallkappen. Woods and meadows stretch along the partly high banks. The Schloßberg between Rakitino and Wetrowo and the gorge near Rakitino are picturesque landscapes . The Graudenwald was an impenetrable wilderness. In the Iskra forest, the Tilse takes on the Liepart stream and near Rakitino the Malan stream.

cultivation

Since the Tilse flows through low-lying terrain, the adjacent lands could be drained cheaply. The Tilsit-Ragnit district administration had her put into a new bed at Woydehnen (now Wetrowo) in 1931/32. At the same time, the lower tilse was regulated from Kurschen (Rakitino) to Tilsit (Sowjetsk) . At Willmannberg a 20 m long bridge was built for the Stallupönen - Tilsit (Sowjetsk) railway. Via Moritzkehmen and Kallkappen the river reached the Schloßmühlenteich and passed through the Tilszelehafen into the Memel.

Castle mill pond in Tilsit

In 1562 the incumbent Tilsit governor Kaspar von Nostiz had the castle mill pond dammed; because with the sufficient water supply of the river Duke Albrecht wanted to build a water mill for economic reasons.
