Timothy Peter "Tim" Johnson (born December 28, 1946 in Canton , South Dakota ) is an American politician ( Democrat ). He was a United States Senator from South Dakota from 1997 to 2015 .

After finishing school, Tim Johnson studied at the University of South Dakota and received his bachelor's degree in 1969 and his master's degree in 1970 . 1975 he was in law the Juris Doctor awarded to the University of South Dakota. After completing his studies, he worked as a lawyer. In 1979 he became a member of the South Dakota House of Representatives and joined the State Senate in 1983 .

In 1986 he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, from which he resigned on January 3, 1997. On this day he moved to his victory over Larry Pressler in the United States Senate , which he still belongs. He was last confirmed in office in 2008 with 62.5 percent of the votes against Joel Dykstra . From January 3, 2011, he succeeded Chris Dodd as chairman of the banking and urban development committee .

He did not stand for election again in 2014 and therefore left office in January 2015. He was succeeded by the Republican Mike Rounds .

Johnson is married to social worker Barbara Johnson and has three children with her. The son Brendan was a federal attorney for South Dakota from 2009 to 2015 .
