Tobias Hoffmann (born February 23, 1982 in Remscheid ) is a German jazz guitarist and composer .

Live and act

Hoffmann first learned to play guitar autodidactically and under the guidance of his father from 1988; from 1998 to 2001 he received lessons in both classical guitar and jazz guitar at the Bonn Music School. Already a young student from 2000 to 2001, after graduating from high school and doing community service, he studied jazz guitar as the main subject between 2002 and 2007 at the Cologne University of Music .

In early 2006 Hoffmann started his band Parachutes as a trio. In June 2006 the band performed for the Goethe Institute in London; her first album was released in 2007. In the following year he changed the line-up with Holger Werner on bass clarinet and Frank Kampschroer on electric bass to a quartet; Concerts in Germany (recording by Radio Bremen) and Luxembourg followed, as well as another record production with the title Fallschirme 2 . He played with various ensembles in Latin America, India, Russia, Cuba and large parts of Europe, presented himself at the Gexto Jazz Festival, Traumzeit Festival , North Sea Jazz Festival , the Burghausen Jazz Week and JazzBaltica . In 2012 he founded the Tobias Hoffmann Trio, whose album 11 Famous Songs Tenderly Messed Up was released on the indie label Klaeng Records , which Hoffmann co-founded .

He is also a member of the band Expressway Sketches (with Benjamin Schaefer , Max Andrzejewski and since 2014 Lukas Kranzelbinder ), Max Andrzejewski's Hütte , Peter Kahlenborn Trio and on recordings by Magnus Mehl , Frederik Köster , Mucho Gusto , Tobias Christl’s favorite band , Bellbird and Cologne Contemporary Orchestra with Christian Brückner and Frederik Köster.

Hoffmann, who teaches at the Open JazzHausSchule , organized the “Zockpalast” series in Cologne's Barracuda Bar from 2007 to 2013 . At the beginning of 2010 he founded the Cologne jazz collective KLAENG with Jonas Burgwinkel , Tobias Christl, Pablo Held , Niels Klein , Frederik Köster and Robert Landfermann , which since then has also been active as a publisher as an indie jazz record label.

Prizes and awards

Hoffmann won the New German Jazz Prize in 2009 as a member of the Frederik Köster Quartet . In 2010 he was awarded the Horst and Gretl Will scholarship of the city of Cologne for jazz / improvised music; The reasoning stated: “Jazz, blues , rock and e-sounds meet, merge - or consciously contrast. ... His compositions have the simplicity of songs. The musicians have so much room for improvisation and design. With his unusual style, Hoffmann defines a new path between jazz and rock. ”With Max Andrzejewski 's hut , he also won the New German Jazz Prize in 2013 (and is thus the only musician to date to have won this prize twice). In 2015 Hoffmann received an ECHO Jazz as Guitarist of the Year National for the album Tobias Hoffmann Trio - 11 Famous Songs Tenderly Messed Up . In January 2016 he received the WDR Jazz Prize in the “Improvisation” category.
