A new life is a German television film by Bettina Woernle from 2019. It is the fifth episode of the ZDF television series Tonio & Julia with Maximilian Grill and Oona Devi Liebich in the leading roles.

action

Kati Amin appears in the family counseling center of the Catholic parish of St. Sixtus. The IT expert has not only been unable to walk for a year after a stroke, but her left arm is also paralyzed, so she only struggles with her life. In addition, her twelve-year-old son Henry rejects her and is aggressive towards her. His behavior is also noticeable at school. This leads to the fact that Henry is expelled from school for a few days because he beat his classmates. Pastor Niederegger happens to be at school and witnesses Henry's problems. So he cannot avoid helping the boy.

For Julia, Kati Amin's case is a challenge, because she has little experience with the limitations after a stroke. Therefore, she seeks advice from a physiotherapist and also consults the clinic doctor Dr. Felix Born. Julia learns from him that there are sometimes very typical types of depression after a stroke, which can, however, be treated well. At the moment, however, Kati Amin refuses any help and does not even appear at her appointment at the family counseling center. Her husband Yunus apologizes to Julia by saying that this would be Kati's decision. But Julia explains to him that this would affect her entire family: both himself and Henry. Without further ado, she lets Yunus use the free consultation hour and listens to his worries. At the same time, Tonio takes care of Henry, who has to do social lessons at the church for his misconduct at school. Henry is ultimately very happy about that, because he has someone in Tonio who can finally listen to him.

Yunus Amin now comes to the counseling center regularly. Julia encourages his wife, who still sinks in self-pity, to set boundaries and to think about himself and his needs. That includes his son and it is important to spend time with him. Should his wife not understand this and continue to make no move to change anything in her situation, he could well threaten her with moving out. Kati Amin is extremely annoyed at first, but soon regains her senses and tries to do something useful in the household. Despite small failures, her husband is pleasantly surprised. But the joy doesn't last long, because when Kati tries to help Henry with his homework, the whole thing escalates and Henry runs away from home. Everyone is now looking for the boy and Kati also uses her options. Since Henry has taken a laptop with her, she can use it to locate him and makes her way to him on her own. Her son is impressed and both speak out. Yunus is also amazed and has hope again that everything will turn out fine.

Reviews

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv rated: "Author Katja Kittendorf shows [in this episode] to the viewer that all members are affected when there are family difficulties." "As clearly - in the context of an entertainment film - the clinical picture is also described here but in the end it was mainly dramaturgical healing powers, including individual strength of will ('I make an effort'), at work. In contrast, the interaction pattern, the mutual dependency, which also makes the two 'men' of the family sick, is presented more plausibly. Above all, the healing process of the son, whom the pastor takes under his wing before he goes in and out of the clapboard, skilfully integrates the row staff and is a humorous counterpoint to the aggressive melancholy of the female main character in the episode. "

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best rating (thumbs up) and wrote: “This series of values is not a bland seminary and, despite all 'seriousness', it is hearty and flippant like the beginning of the series.” Conclusion: “Grounded, allusive, sometimes cheeky. "
