Feelings of Guilt is a German television film by Stefan Bühling from 2019. It is the third episode of the ZDF television series Tonio & Julia with Maximilian Grill and Oona Devi Liebich in the leading roles.

action

After Tonio let himself be carried away to hug Julia like in her youth and to kiss, plagued with guilty feelings. As a Catholic pastor, he is not allowed to enter into a relationship. In order not to be tempted again, he therefore spoke out against Julia's hiring as a new family therapist at the St. Sixtus community. Julia is angry at first and may consider starting her own business as a therapist, as she had already successfully practiced in Berlin.

With the distance to each other, it doesn't work so quickly at first, because Tonio and Julia witness an accident and have to provide first aid. After a party, 18-year-old Ben Massinger crashed into a tree at very high speed while he was drunk. Badly injured, Ben is brought to the clinic. Julia has to take care of Ben's ex-girlfriend Nele the next day. She blames herself for the accident because she quarreled with Ben and he had therefore left the party in a hurry. Due to the serious injuries, Ben's future plans from a professional ice hockey career are destroyed. This hits Ben's father particularly hard because he had trained his son himself and was also an active athlete. Tonio tries to talk to Ben's parents and tries to help them. After Ben had to have a leg amputated, Ben's mother Nele also made massive allegations. Julia would have liked to prevent this, but could not react because Tonio had not informed her about the amputation. Julia and Tonio agree to coordinate better with each other in the future. Otherwise, both parents and Nele are in danger of breaking up over the question of guilt. When Nele suddenly disappeared, her mother now reproaches Eva Massinger. Julia and Jette Kaufmann go to look for the girl together and finally find her totally drunk at the lake.

After an intensive discussion between Ben's parents and Tonio and Julia, they realize their mistakes. Ben's mother had always tried to prevent Nele and Ben from connecting. Now she gives in and tolerates Nele at her son's sick bed. Tonio and Julia are happy that they managed to smooth out the conflicts between the Massingers. As a “well-rehearsed team”, they should continue to work together, both agree.

Reviews

Rainer Tittelbach from tittelbach.tv found the work “cinematic [...] [as] absolutely solid. The landscape is often used atmospherically, not as a mood generator as in the classic home drama, but at most as a mood amplifier. Again and again there are morning fog fields over the Tölzer Land; but the majority of the scenes (in contrast to the spring series, for example ) take place indoors. However, rapid scene changes or parallel montages ensure that the overall impression is more varied than sterile. "

Tilmann P. Gangloff wrote for the Frankfurter Rundschau : “Stefan Bühling did not stage 'feelings of guilt' like a thriller, but the story is emotionally captivating, especially since the title duo has to fear in the end that Nele could harm himself out of sheer grief. Cinematically, however, 'feelings of guilt' is disappointing. "

Martin Seng fromquotemeter.de judged: “The family conflict doesn’t seem very believable and the character constellations make a very artificial impression, as if one wanted to conjure up a dispute at the bend and break. In addition, some dialogues are counterproductive, because sentences like 'Why do you God allow something like this?' are not only clichéd, but also far removed from any realistic conversation between adult people. ”The only positive“ is the picturesque Bavarian idyll, which Ralf Mendele's camera knows how to stage. ”“ Ultimately, 'Tonia & Julia: feelings of guilt' is very much cautious television film, which could have been more in the right places.
