Taras Wassylowytsch Dolnyj ( Russian Тарас Васильевич Дольный , Ukrainian Тарас Васильович Дольний , Eng. Transcription Taras Dolnyy * 18th June 1959 in Chumali , Oblast Ternopil ) is a former Soviet , then Ukrainian biathlete .

Taras Dolnyj is a teacher and lives in Ternopil . His international career began at the 1983 Winter Universiade when he entered the winners' lists twice at the biathlon premiere at the Winter Universiade in Sofia . In the individual he won ahead of Andrei Nepein and Leonid Nowikow , in the sprint the order was Dolny in front of Nowikow and Nepein. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the re-establishment of national associations in the successor states, he was one of the first members of the national squad of Ukraine. At that time, already over 30 years old, he had not yet made it to the international squad of the Soviet Union, although he had been biathlon since 1978. Like so many other athletes from the successor states, he benefited from the new places in the national squads. He made his international debut at the beginning of the 1992/93 season in Pokljuka in the World Cup , where he was 51st in the individual and 38th in the sprint. The first career highlight was the interim Olympic World Championships in Borowetz in 1993 . In the sprint he was 51st, in the individual 60th. With the relay he reached fifth place on the side of Vitaly Mohylenko , Walentyn Dschyma and Ivan Maksymow . A little later, he won World Cup points for the first time as 21st of an individual in Kontiolahti . He achieved this several times in the following years, but could no longer place better in the World Cup. Dolnyj achieved his best results at the Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer , where he was 18th in the sprint, 12th in the individual and 15th in the relay race with Vitaly Mohylenko, Walentyn Dschyma and Roman Swonkow . With a penalty loop, Dolnyj was also significantly involved in the poor placement of the relay. The last international championships were the 1995 World Championships in Antholz and the 1995 European Championships in Le Grand-Bornand . At the World Championships Dolnyj was 34th in the individual, 17th in the sprint and 11th alongside Oleksandr and Ruslan Lyssenko and Roman Swonkow. With Ruslan Lyssenko, Walentyn Dschyma and Swonkow he achieved his greatest international success at the European Championships by winning the relay bronze medal. The Ukrainian competed in his last World Cup races in 1996 in Östersund and at Holmenkollen in Oslo in the first third of the 1996/97 World Cup season . He completed a sports degree in Ternopil and works as a trainer.
