The Tornowsee is a lake in Ruppiner Schweiz in Brandenburg . It is located east of Kunsterspring and south of Binenwalde . The lake is a state waterway .

Name interpretation

Tornow (Tornov) is a derivative of tarn , Slavic for thorn, thorn bush , so a place where thorn bushes are. 1524 can be found in a document in Tornow , 1541 in the large lake near Tornow . Tornow was originally a settlement after the village became desolate in the Middle Ages , a field mark , today a forestry and eponymous for the lake.

geography

The lake is part of the nature reserve Ruppiner Schweiz and the Ruppiner Seenrinne , which is formed from the Kalksee north of the Tornowsee, the Tornowsee itself and south of it the Zermützelsee , Tetzensee , Molchowsee and Rhin . The chain of lakes extends about 40 kilometers south to the upper part of the Rhinluches .

The Tornowsee borders in the north and in the east on the outer terminal moraine of the Frankfurt phase , with heights of about 100 m, in the west on the associated sander with heights of up to 60 m. With a mirror height of about 38 m, the lake is clearly sunk into its surroundings. The Kalksee is connected to it via the Binenbach; the connection to the Zermützelsee is via the Rottstielfließ.

tourism

The navigable lake is the end of the water hiking trail through the lakes of the Ruppiner Schweiz and can be used to a limited extent with motor boats . The vegetation from old beech stocks and wet meadows makes the landscape attractive. There are various swimming areas and a campsite on the Rottstielfließ.

On the Weilickenberg near the Boltenmühle, archaeologists found traces of a fortified settlement from the younger Bronze Age . The finds from these excavations are kept in the Potsdam Museum of Prehistory and Early History .

The Fontanewanderweg - a circular route around the lake

Boltenmühle water wheel

The Fontanewanderweg leads completely around the lake for a distance of about seven kilometers. On the northern bank you can visit the Boltenmühle, which was almost completely burned out in 1992. It has been rebuilt as an excursion restaurant. The circular route crosses the Tornow spring , the Binenbach and the Rottstielfließ , passes the Weilickenberg and the Zanderblick viewpoint . The village of Rottstiel and the Kunsterwiese are on the route of the Fontane hiking trail .

In some places there are branches to other hiking destinations such as in the north to the Kalksee or in the south to the Forsthaus Tornow . A blue line draws attention to the E 10 European long-distance hiking trail . - After the Rottstiel bridge, the E 10 continues to the forest museum in Stendenitz and in the direction of Neuruppin .
