The skull in the district of Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald in Baden-Württemberg is 556.8  m above sea level. NHN the highest point in the Kaiserstuhl low mountain range .

Surname

The mountain is said to have its name from the executions carried out there that King Otto III. on December 22, 994 during his court day in Leiselheim .

Geography and landscape

The skull is located around 1.9 km east of Bickensohl , a southeastern district of Vogtsburg , and around 3.5 km west-northwest of Bötzingen . The mountain itself is easily recognizable from many Black Forest peaks, such as the Schauinsland or the Feldberg . The skull, on which, in contrast to most areas in the Kaiserstuhl, no wine is grown, is covered with mixed forest.

Summit area and towers

The summit of the Totenkopf consists of two almost equally high peaks, the peaks of which are about 170 m apart. On the slightly higher western crest there is a historical surveying stone and not far to the southwest of it is the Vogtsburg-Totenkopf telecommunications tower . On the eastern tip of the elevation, the Neunlinden-Buck ( 555  m above sea level ), stands the Neunlinden Tower , a 14 m high observation tower built in 1900 , from which the view of the Black Forest, for example, can be enjoyed. Directions

The summit can be reached from Ihringen via hiking trails that lead via Martinshöfe to Lilienhof and from there to Totenkopf, or via a hiking trail from the Lenzenberg excursion restaurant past the Neunlindenturm to Totenkopf. Several hiking trails also lead from the other side of the Kaiserstuhl to the mountain, which can also be reached from Oberrotweil via a non-public road.
