Traisental cycle path

The Traisental cycle path is a 111 kilometer long cycle path that was opened on June 10, 2007. It leads from Traismauer in the Sankt Pölten-Land district via St. Pölten and Lilienfeld along the Traisen to Mariazell and is a popular cycle route. The attraction of the route is the scenic contrast between the gentle vineyards near Traismauer and the mountains of the Mostviertel Alps with their mountain forests and lakes.

Routing

The Traisental cycle path branches off from the Danube cycle path at the marine port in Traismauer . From here the route leads via Traismauer (km 2.5) along the Traisen to Einöd, where the Traisen is crossed, to Herzogenburg  (km 11.4).

Shortly before Herzogenburg (near St. Andrä ) the Traisental- Danube Cycle Path joins the Traisental Cycle Path when coming from the Altenwörth Danube power station .

Past Ratzersdorfer and Viehofner  See and St. Pölten with the government district  (km 23.4), continue via Ochsenburg  (km 31.7), Wilhelmsburg and Marktl to Lilienfeld  (km 46.2). From here the route leads via Schrambach to Freiland  (km 54.1), Innerfahrafeld , Hohenberg  (km 63.2), Mitterbach and St. Aegyd  (km 73.4). The approx. 5 km long route between and Kernhof runs on the route of the Leobersdorfer Bahn , which was discontinued in this section in 1988. From here the route climbs for a length of four kilometers to the top of the Gscheid pass  (km 83.8) (maximum gradient up to 18%), and then up to the Michelbühel (L101,  999  m above sea level ), that's the highest point of the cycle path reached. From Ulreichsberg  (km 91.3) the route leads across the state border into Styria, past Hubertussee and along the Walster to Mariazell (km 107.1).

Expansion and marking

The first few kilometers are a good gravel road, the rest is paved, mostly along a cycle path , rarely on country roads.

The route from Traismauer to Kernhof is easy to drive, from Kernhof to Mariazell the route is more difficult because there is a large difference in altitude to be overcome. Uphill it is about 975 meters in altitude, downhill 320 meters in altitude. For an average cyclist, you should calculate about 8.5 hours of travel time.

One possibility is to take the Mariazellerbahn all the way to Mariazell and return the route, or, as the easiest option, only from Kernhof to Traismauer, as it is always slightly downhill.

The route is well signposted throughout.

The ADFC awarded the track four stars in 2009 (max. Five stars). This rating already means a special cycling experience.
