The Lilienfeld Abbey is an important center today, which places great emphasis on the liturgy of the hours and celebrating Holy Mass together . The monastery is known for its large forest property (2015: 11,000 hectares), making it the second richest canonical organization in Austria in terms of property .
1974 Lilienfeld was raised to town.
Surname
The earliest mentions of the name go back to the abbey: 1209 "abbatia [...] Lienenuelt hactenus dictum", 1211 "abbas de Lilienuelde". Contrary to popular belief, this does not mean a field with lilies. The name goes back to Middle High German liele , which means clematis .
