Trevor Baylis (2006)

Trevor Baylis CBE (born May 13, 1937 in London , † March 5, 2018 in Eel Pie Island ) was a British inventor . He was best known for his wind-up radio, which was intended to make modern technology easily accessible to people in developing countries .

He was concerned with the development of electrical energy sources that draw their energy from the power of the user . So in 1993 he created a radio that, once wound up, worked for 14 minutes and later went into mass production in South Africa. This enables people in developing countries without a power connection to receive radio broadcasts and thus find out news and useful information.

Later, he worked on a shoe - charger that at each step of water through a tiny turbine passes. A prototype delivered 1.2 watts , the power an MP3 player needs. In 2010 these shoes should come onto the market, the output of which can be up to three watts, which should also enable the use of cell phones .

2010 Baylis stated publicly that he as a child by a curate of the Church of England was sexually abused, to which he already in his autobiography Clock This was received from the year 1999th

In October 1997 he was awarded the Order of the British Empire (Officer, OBE), and on New Year's 2015 he was promoted to Commander of the British Empire for his services to the protection of intellectual property. Since 1997, eight British universities have awarded him honorary doctorates ( Nottingham Trent University , Southampton Institute , Open University , Middlesex University , Oxford Brookes University , Heriot-Watt University , Leeds Metropolitan University , University of Brighton ) and four honorary masters.
