Triacetin ( glycerin triacetate ) is an ester of the triol glycerin and acetic acid .

Extraction and presentation

It is synthesized from glycerin and acetic acid.

properties

Triacetin is a colorless, oily to rancid smelling liquid. It can be mixed with ethanol, diethyl ether and chloroform, but not with aliphatic hydrocarbons and natural or mineral oils. It is also somewhat soluble in water. The flash point is 138 ° C, the ignition temperature 430 ° C.

use

It is used as a plasticizer for paints and adhesives, as an additive for special hardeners or as an adhesive for the production of cigarette filters based on cellulose acetate .

In the food industry, it is used as a plasticizer for chewing gum or as a flavor carrier . It has an antimicrobial effect and is used as an emollient and, due to its hygroscopic effect, also as a humectant .

In the EU, it is only approved as a food additive for chewing gum and flavorings and has the designation E 1518 .
