The BG 74 Göttingen (Basketballgemeinschaft Göttingen eV) is a Göttingen sports club with a focus on basketball . Thanks to years of club work, the club has been able to expand its branches to baseball , American football , cricket , ultimate frisbee and gymnastics .

history

The basketball divisions of the two Göttingen clubs TG 46 Göttingen and Tuspo 61 Göttingen formed the game community BG 46/61 Göttingen in 1970 , which was originally only intended to be the first step on the way to merging the two clubs. When the merger plans failed, those responsible were faced with the choice of either dissolving the syndicate or founding a new basketball club. In 1974 the decision was made to found a new company, BG 74 Göttingen. The greatest success in the club's history was the rise of the men's team under coach John Patrick to the basketball Bundesliga in 2007. For economic and legal reasons to protect the club, the men's Bundesliga team was spun off as BG Göttingen .

Teams

Men's

The first men's team of the BG Göttingen has played in this class almost continuously since the establishment of the 2nd national basketball league in 1975. The team failed several times just to get promoted to the Bundesliga. Men's head coach John Patrick took over the team again for the 2006/07 season after a year-long coaching engagement in Japan, and in 2007 he made it to the basketball league .

Since the license transfer, the first men of the BG 74 Göttingen played in the regional league before relegation to the upper league (2014) was inevitable.

Ladies

The women's team has always played in one of the top three leagues since the club was founded. In 1978 the women's basketball department of the multiple German champion Göttingen 05 joined the BG. In 2003 they rose again to the 1st women's basketball league and played there until the 2008/09 season. The promotion team was trained by Mahmut Ataman until the middle of the 2006/07 season . From then on, the previous assistant coach Vlastibor Klimeš took over the team. Under him only succeeded in relegation by winning the relegation round, the team reached fourth place in the 2007/08 season and thus played in the play-offs for the German championship. At the end of the 2007/08 season, the club announced a deficit of 120,000 euros and announced that the continued existence of the women's team in the 1st Bundesliga was at risk. However, a rescue operation by fans and sponsors secured the first division. In 2008 Göttingen announced the conclusion of a contract with a name sponsor for the women's team. The women's first division team therefore went into the 2008/09 season as Trinos Göttingen. It was also Jennifer Kerns appointed as co-trainer, but continued to play as active on the field with. After the 2008/09 season there were again financial problems. These resulted in the team not being granted a first division license. Since no license for the 2nd division had been applied for, the team was withdrawn from the game. Four players from the former Bundesliga team then moved to the first regional league for the second team, including Jennifer Kerns, who acted as the coach of the new team. By saying goodbye to the national league, the name sponsor withdrew, so that the team now played again under the name of the parent club, BG 74 Göttingen. In the 2010/11 season, the team under coach Kerns achieved promotion from the Regionalliga to the Second Bundesliga North. In the course of the following year there were again financial problems, which could be resolved at short notice and the game was secured for the rest of the season. Jennifer Kerns' team was promoted to participate in the PlayOffs. They finally won the playoffs of the season 16/17 and rose after the 2-1 against the TG Neuss Tigers and after the 2-0 against Wolfpack Wolfenbüttel.
