New Basket Oberhausen (NBO) is a basketball club from Oberhausen . The club was founded in 1992 when, due to conceptual differences, significant parts of the youth division and several teams separated from the former Bundesliga club COBG Oberhausen. Within a decade, the first women's team made it from the district class to the first women's basketball league , where it first appeared in the 2002/03 season. The team spent 14 years in a row in the top division and was twice German runner-up (seasons 2004/05 and 2013/14). In the cup, NBO has reached the round of the Final Four five times and emerged as the winner of this competition for the first time in March 2012. In the following year, the team failed to defend their title in the final against USC Freiburg .
At the end of the 2014/15 season, eleventh place in the table would have meant relegation, but due to the withdrawal of the Rhein-Main Baskets , NBO was able to remain first-class. After the team ended up in a relegation zone again a year later, the club announced that it was planning a new start in the regional league under the motto "back to the roots". After two seasons in Regionalliga West, NBO was relegated to Oberliga 1, but was able to rise again in second place in the 2018/19 season, as no promoted team could be found among the top three in the Westphalian Oberliga.
Julia Gajewski from Oberhausen was the trainer for the first two decades with only a few interruptions . She and her long-time partner at the bank, John F. Bruhnke , were named best coach by the DBBL in 2005. When Gajewski declared in April 2012 that he would no longer be available for this task in the future, the club signed Predrag Lukic (previously ChemCats Chemnitz ) as his successor, but separated from him in November 2012 after eight championship defeats in a row. While Stefanie Richter, the former player and coach of the second team, temporarily looked after the team, Katja Zberch acted as the trainer from the beginning of 2013 until the end of the 2013/14 season . She was followed by Stefan Mienack as a full-time coach; Katja Zberch, who was honored as “Trainer of the Year” by the DBBL, moved to the second tier for professional reasons. After a series of games without a win, NBO split from Mienack on January 26, 2015 and announced the following day that Zberch was again serving as the coach of the first team. At the end of the season, Zberch announced her final resignation and at the end of April 2015 the club presented the Dutchman Wim van Ek as the new head coach at the “Green Table” after receiving their first division membership. However, on October 19, 2015, the latter asked for the contract to be terminated after the first five games of the 2015/16 season had been lost. Team manager Henry Canton acted as interim coach and led the team to its first competitive wins of the current season before Ondrej Sykora was introduced as the new coach at the beginning of November . After retiring to the Regionalliga, Henry Canton took over the coaching post again.
Venues
At the beginning of the 2009/10 season, the NBO relocated the venue for the Bundesliga championship games from the East Sports Hall in the Schlad district to the larger and better equipped Willy-Jürissen-Halle in the south of the Oberhausen center. Training and games for the numerous youth teams continued in the East Sports Hall; The club's office is also located there. For the 2016/17 season, the first team returned to the East Hall.
Teams
The club currently has three women's and six female youth teams. In the youth field, NBO has won seven German and 19 West German championships since it was founded. The over 35s starting for the NBO became German champions five times in a row in this age group from 2011 to 2015 . In 2019, the over 35s championship title could be achieved again.
