Knüll barracks Schwarzenborn

Location of the Knüll barracks in Schwarzenborn in Hesse

An entrance to the Schwarzenborn military training area

The military training area Schwarzenborn (military shorthand TrÜbPl Schwarzenborn) with effect 1 January 2014, the training area of the Bundeswehr in Hesse . It is named after the town of Schwarzenborn located next to it . The on-site training area covers around 1,800 hectares. Of this, about 800 ha are meadows and arable land and approx. 835 ha in forest areas. Traffic routes and bodies of water made up the rest of the total area.

Barracks (Schwarzenborn camp)

Three kilometers southwest of Schwarzenborn is the crumpled barracks with, an associated 1,800-hectare training area , as the site of the Bundeswehr. It is subdivided into a technical area, an accommodation area and the Bundeswehr service center. The barracks already had an infrastructure when it was built in 1934. Since then, it has been expanded in several stages, so that today 6 essential property development stages can be identified. Today it is mainly home to Jäger Battalion 1 and the inactive Jäger Battalion 921 .

History and occupancy today

The history of the military training area and the Knüll barracks goes back to the days of the army of the German Empire . The plateaus of the Knüllgebirge were used at the end of the 19th century for imperial maneuvers and for artillery shooting exercises. In 1899 negotiations began to create a military training area, but these failed due to resistance from the city of Schwarzenborn and from farmers. But even after the First World War , the area was used for training purposes by the significantly reduced Reichswehr . With the end of the Weimar Republic and the National Socialist takeover in 1933, the paramilitary organized SA of the NSDAP became interested in the area. In 1933 a large tent camp of this organization took place here. The Schutzstaffel , then still under the command of the SA, acquired land around Schwarzenborn in 1934. The preparatory work for the establishment of a training area and a barrack camp followed immediately. The "Schwarzenborn Camp", which was completed in the same year, was handed over to the Reich staff of the state police after the SA was ousted. In 1936 the Wehrmacht took over the military training area and the camp. She had it expanded and from May 1, 1936, used the facilities and the area for military exercises. The units lying on the military training area changed constantly until the end of the Second World War . After the end of the war, the areas of the military training area were again used for civilian purposes. High-ranking Nazis were initially imprisoned in the camp by the Allies . But as early as 1946 it was used as a reception camp for forced laborers and prisoners of war from Eastern Europe. In 1948 the Hessian state government took over the camp and used the accommodation for a lung sanatorium.

The military training area and the Schwarzenborn camp were taken over by the Bundeswehr as early as 1955. From May 1, 1955 to March 31, 2007, the Schwarzenborn military training area was set up here, and from April 1, 2007 to December 31, 2013 it was only called "Schwarzenborn military training area". The pulmonary hospital cleared the camp, which was almost completely burned down in 1959 for reasons of disinfection.

After the military training area and the Schwarzenborn camp were taken over by the Bundeswehr, the 51st Panzer Grenadier Battalion moved in on June 2, 1959. This battalion was set up on March 18, 1959 in the Stegskopf camp in Daaden - Emmerzhausen . In December 1961 it was moved from Schwarzenborn to Rotenburg an der Fulda in the Alheimer barracks .

On April 1, 1961, the anti-aircraft battery 50 was installed at the site, which initially remained here until November 26, 1962 and was then moved to Fritzlar to the Georg Friedrich barracks .

The 132nd Panzer Grenadier Battalion, set up in the Spilburg barracks in Wetzlar on November 16, 1961, was relocated to the Knüll barracks in December 1961. On March 11, 1973, Army Structure 3 was renamed Jägerbataillon 132, and Army Structure 4 was renamed Panzergrenadierbataillon 152 on October 1, 1981. In this way, an association originally assigned to Panzergrenadierbrigade 13 became a unit of Panzerbrigade 15 , both under the command of the 5th Panzer Division . The end of the Cold War initially did not lead to any changes for the battalion. It was not reclassified to Jägerregiment 1 until July 1, 2006. On July 1, 2015, another restructuring took place to form Jägerbataillon 1, which is still in the barracks today.

The training companies 1/5 and 2/5 set up in the Stegskopf camp (Daaden military training area) in 1962 were relocated to the barracks in Schwarzenborn that same year. While the training company 1/5 was dissolved in 1974, this fate befell the training company 2/5 only in 1977. In 1962, the training company 12/5 was set up in the Fritsch barracks in Koblenz and also relocated to Schwarzenborn in the same year. This company was decommissioned in 1978.

In 1976 the barracks near Schwarzenborn officially became the location of the Bundeswehr.

The 2nd company of tank battalion 151, which was set up in the Fritsch barracks in Koblenz on October 1, 1980, was stationed in the Knüll barracks from 1981 until the battalion was disbanded on September 30, 1992.

The Schwarzenborn driving school group was active in the barracks in the 1980s.

Since August 1, 2009, BWI Informationstechnik GmbH Schwarzenborn has also been located in the barracks as the IT service provider for the Bundeswehr.

With the reclassification of Jägerregiment 1 to Jägerbataillon 1, the non-active Jäger Battalion 921 , which is still based in the barracks, was set up on July 1, 2015 . The training support company 1 was also formed on July 1, 2015 in Schwarzenborn and is still at the site.

The dental station (Terr) H 428 and the dentist group 405/4 between April 1, 1981 and December 31, 1998 were set up at the site for medical care between July 1, 1973 and March 31, 1981. From July 1, 1984 to September 30, 2015, the Schwarzenborn medical team was stationed in the barracks and the Stadtallendorf medical center was set up as part of the Schwarzenborn unit during the same period. Between July 1, 1972 and June 30, 1997, medical area 44/3 was equipped with material.

The military training area and the barracks were also used by the Schwarzenborn site administration, later the Schwarzenborn branch of the Homberg site administration, the Schwarzenborn service center, the site telecommunications systems 415/103 and 415/104, the telecommunications systems Bundeswehr 401/206 and 401/223, the site ammunition defeat 441/3, the anti-aircraft training range for all troops 441/1 and the on-site firing range 441/8. The Schwarzenborn base of the army repair logistics has been set up at the site since March 1, 2006 and the Schwarzenborn fire brigade, which had previously served as the Schwarzenborn training area fire brigade since 1988, has been in place since June 1, 2013.

In 2008, extensive renovation, new construction and expansion work began in the Knüll barracks. The Hessian construction management also commissioned a target planning for the property and a property-related concept for the outdoor facilities.

The Bundeswehr stationing concept 2011 brought the end of the Schwarzenborn military training area. It was converted into an on- site practice area on December 31, 2013 .

In the course of the wave of refugees from Syria, tents for 500 refugees were set up in the Knüll barracks in August 2015. At the beginning of September 2015, the asylum seekers protested against the accommodation situation in a tent city of the Schwarzenborn Knüll barracks.

In April 2017, the Bundeswehr officer Franco A., who led a double life as a Syrian refugee and is said to have planned a right-wing terrorist attack, was arrested due to terror investigations against Bundeswehr soldiers from 2017 . He had also been stationed in the Knüll barracks. As a result, there were also inspections and controls in the Knüll barracks with regard to the implementation of the traditional order of the Bundeswehr.
