Tsunami - Terror in the North Sea is a German TV disaster film by Winfried Oelsner from 2005 and describes a tsunami on the North Sea coast. Kristian Kiehling and Anja Knauer play the main roles .

action

Hamburg-based energy company Alpha Gas operates the Rantum IV drilling rig in the North Sea off the island of Sylt . The company illegally searches for methane hydrate , the energy source of the future, under the grumpy drill manager Kramlick . The company's environmental officer, Christian Wieland, does not agree with Kramlick's ruthless methods. He fears that the planned blasting to measure the deposit could trigger a chain reaction .

The young hydrologist Svenja Schweiger, who works for the EU environmental agency and criticizes the project's lack of transparency, is also concerned. Since, after months of trying, she has no contact with Wieland, she is convinced that Rantum IV is not only looking for crude oil and is worried about the environment. So she tries to visit Wieland personally. She reaches Wieland's house when his friends Helge and Jaan want to pick him up to go fishing. However, they find Wieland fallen to death at the foot of his stairs. Everything looks like an accident to the police, but in reality Brock, Kramlick's right-hand man, has eliminated Wieland.

A little later, Jaan receives a scheduled e-mail from his deceased friend, which the latter had created in case something should happen to him. The mail contains a Wieland security report on the project on Rantum IV. Jaan passes the documents on to Svenja Schweiger, which he finds on the beach. Both of them barely escaped a tidal wave several meters high on Jaan's motorcycle - the result of a measuring explosion that Kramlick had in the meantime carried out.

Svenja can get information from her colleague Wolfgang and learns about the cause of the tsunami . Together with Jaan, she makes her own way to the oil rig, where she hopes to find evidence. During the approach with a helicopter, however, Kramlick learns that his company has withdrawn its trust due to his brutal approach. He should be removed and handed over to the authorities. Kramlick sees himself cornered and turns the tables: He threatens to detonate the remaining explosive charges and thus trigger another much more powerful tsunami if the company does not transfer 10 million euros to him.

Arriving at Rantum IV, Jaan and Svenja are immediately taken prisoner, from which they can free themselves with the help of the engineer Kortner. They try to stop Kramlick, who seems to be losing his mind more and more. When Kramlick finds out that Alpha Gas did not respond to his blackmail, he sets off the detonation. the tidal wave that then builds up exceeds the first by a multiple. Everything points to the fact that Sylt will be hit and overrun by the tsunami. While a helpless evacuation attempt is underway, Kramlick tries to mingle with the people on Sylt in order to escape undetected. Jaan, on the other hand, has the saving idea just in time how the tidal wave can be broken off Sylt. In the showdown , he also manages to get into his sister Franka's boat, on which Kramlick is also trying to escape. Jaan switches off Kramlick and saves the hostages.

background

The film was sold in 120 countries including Indonesia .

The film was widely discussed because of the timeliness of the subject. Interestingly, it was filmed before the real tsunami hit the shores of the Indian Ocean and the topic of the threat of tidal waves was on everyone's lips. In October 2005 it was successfully broadcast on Pro 7 after reaching 5 million viewers at its world premiere on Spanish television.

criticism

“After the devastating flood disaster in Southeast Asia, those in charge of ProSieben had no choice but to postpone the broadcast of the 'Event Movie' planned for spring. Now the mourning period is apparently over and the TV 'tsunami' is allowed to roll towards the audience. After all: in this ridiculously crude mixture of Schmonzette and action thriller, which is completely disguised from a dramatic perspective, hardly anything reminds of the sad reality. Conclusion: lame North Sea wave with a sensational title. "

Trivia

The props of the control station for the triggering of the tsunami consisted among other things of two data analyzers DA-10 from the company Wandel & Goltermann . The devices were functional, the self-test went perfectly. However, with these measuring devices you can only analyze the data stream of a V.24 interface and never trigger a tsunami.
