Tupelo [ ˈtuːpəloʊ ] is a city and seat of the county seat in Lee County in the US state of Mississippi with 34,546 inhabitants (2010). The city became world famous as the birthplace of Elvis Presley .
history
The urban area was formerly populated by Indians of the Chickasaw and Choctaw tribes . By 1830 everyone had been driven from their homeland.
On May 26, 1736, the Battle of Ackia took place in the area, which was fought between the British and their allies, the Chickasaw, against the French and their allies, the Choctaw. The city was founded in 1870 and is named after the native Ogeche tupelo tree (Nyssa aquatica), a species from the Nyssaceae family .
In July 1864, the Battle of Tupelo took place, in which the Union forces under General Andrew Jackson Smith defeated the Confederates under the leadership of Nathan Bedford Forrest . After the war, a railway line brought prosperity and growth to Tupelo.
In 1936 a tornado hit the city. In 2015, a Walmart was bombed in Tupelo because the company stopped selling Confederate war flags .
20 structures and sites in Tupelo are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 1, 2018).
