The Tweed River is a river in the extreme northeast of the Australian state of New South Wales .

Origin of name

The Tweed River was named after the river of the same name in Scotland . Although the river runs a few kilometers south of the border between New South Wales and Queensland, “north of the Tweed River” refers to people and places in Queensland, whereas “south of the Tweed River” in Queensland refers to people and places in the southern states Australia is. The term is believed to come from the vacation trips taken by residents of New South Wales and Victoria along the Pacific Highway along the dramatic coast of northern New South Wales. The trunk road crosses many rivers in its course, the last of which is the Tweed River before reaching the resorts on the Gold Coast , just north of the border.

geography

The river's catchment area essentially comprises the erosion caldera of the Tweed Volcano , a huge, extinct volcano whose magma cone is Mount Warning . The total area of the catchment area is 1,080 km², which is limited by the McPherson Range , the Burringbar Range , the Condong Range and the Tweed Range .

The river has its source northeast of the village of Lillian Rock . Then it flows through the villages of Kunghur, Terragon and Uki . South of Mount Warning leads the Doon Doon Creek from the south. It is dammed in the Clarrie Hall reservoir . The Barill Creek flows from the north near Terragon . Further downstream, Korrumbyn Creek and the larger Oxley River join it at Byangum . After that the Tweed River flows through Murwillumbah .

In Tumbulgum opens Rous River in the Tweed River. Only 2 kilometers before the river flows into the Tasman Sea , the Terranora Creek flows into it . The river reaches the Tasman Sea at Tweed Heads . Its estuary , which begins above Murwillumbah, is an important habitat for water birds.

muzzle

There is a sand transport system at the mouth of the Tweed River. A breakwater at the north end of Letitia Spit collects the sand, which is then pumped under the estuary to the beaches in neighboring Queensland . The outlets of the sand transportation system are at Duranbah Beach , Snapper Rocks East , Snapper Rocks West , Greenmount Beach and Kirra . The mouth, which is around 150 meters wide, is also regularly dredged.

Climate and vegetation

The valley of the Tweed River has a mild, subtropical climate. High annual rainfall makes the volcanic soil fertile. The valley used to be overgrown with rainforest , but today most of it has been cut down. Some remains of it can still be found in the national parks and other protected areas. The lowlands along the river are used to grow sugar cane and other crops.

Administration, events and tourism

The surrounding Local Government Area Tweed Shire is named after the river.

Various events take place on the river every year. Its lower reaches are known as good fishing water. In addition, boating, rowing, and water skiing are popular pastimes on the river.
