Twink , actually John Charles Alder (born November 29, 1944 in Colchester , Essex , England ) is an English drummer , singer , composer and actor . As a musician, he was one of the driving forces behind the development of psychedelic rock music in England.

Life

Alder grew up in a musical family. His paternal grandmother was a concert pianist.

music

In 1963 Alder played in a rhythm and blues band from Colchester called "Dane Stephens and the Deep Beats". A year later it became "The Fairies" with the line-up: Dane Stephens (vocals / harmonica), John Acutt (lead guitar), Mick Weaver (rhythm guitar / fiddle), John Fred Gandy (bass) and John Alder (drums ). In 1964 they recorded the single Don't Think Twice It's Alright for Decca Records .

Alder, who had long, curly hair, was often given a perm product called "Twink" by his fans, whereupon he adopted this word as a stage name.

The Fairies were on their way to success when Stephens caused a serious fatal accident and was jailed. He was replaced by Nick Wymer from the "Nix Nomads". With this line-up, they recorded two singles in 1965, Get Yourself Home and Don't Mind . When Stephens returned, Wymer had to vacate his seat, but the group soon broke up. In 1991, Twink, Stephens and Weaver got together again to record two tracks for Twink's album Odds & Beginnings .

Twink had lived in the Chelsea district of London since 1965 . After leaving the Fairies, he joined the band "The In-Crowd" as a drummer in August 1966, from which the cult band Tomorrow emerged a few months later . The remaining band members were Steve Howe (guitar; later with Yes ), Keith West (vocals) and John "Junior" Wood (bass).

When West stormed the charts in 1967 with his solo project Excerpt From A Teenage Opera , Tomorrow broke up. Twink and Junior Wood had a single hit with the short-lived band Aquarian Age in 1968 with 10,000 Words In A Cardboard Box . Twink had already made recordings with the band Santa Barbara Machine Head in 1967 ; the group included Ron Wood (later with the Rolling Stones ), Kim Gardner (later with Ashton, Gardner & Dyke ) and Jon Lord (later with Deep Purple ).

In March 1968 Twink replaced drummer Skip Allen at Pretty Things while recording their concept album SF Sorrow , which was released in December 1968 as the first rock opera ; Tommy by The Who came only in May 1969 to the market.

In 1969, Twink recorded his first solo album, Think Pink , which was released in 1970. The Pink Fairies emerged from the collaboration with the former members of the band The Deviants . With two drummers they recorded the single The Snake and the album Never Never Land . In 1971, Twink left the group but still worked with them on occasion.

After a stay in Morocco , Twink moved to Cambridge , where he played in various bands. From the "Last Minute Put Together Boogie Band", which accompanied the blues guitarist Eddie "Guitar" Burns in January 1972 , the trio "Stars" arose with Twink (drums), Syd Barrett (ex- Pink Floyd ; guitar) and Jack Monck (ex- delivery ; bass). After a few appearances, the project ended because Barrett left the band.

In the years that followed, Twink played with various bands, including Hawkwind and Glider. In 1975 there was a reunion concert of the Pink Fairies; the recording was released on CD in 1982. In 1976 Twink founded "The Fallen Angels". An accident on the way to her first gig brought Twink to the hospital. In 1977 he recorded one of the first punk rock singles with the band "The Rings" , I Wanna Be Free . In 1978 Twink released the EP Do It '77 , the music of which he called "acid punk".

After a long break, the solo album Apocalipstic was released in 1986 . In 1987 the Pink Fairies released a reunion album. In 1989 albums were created in collaboration with the bands "Plasticland" and "Magic Muscle", and in 1990 with "The Bevis Frond". In 1990 the solo album Mr Rainbow was released .

The collaboration with Nik Turner, Hawkwind's longtime saxophonist , resulted in two albums in the mid-1990s, which were released under the band names "PinkWind" and "HawkFairies" as a reminiscence of earlier jam sessions with Hawkwind and the Pink Fairies. A little later, the album Out Of The Pink Into The Blues was released with recordings from the 1970s and 1980s. In 1996/97 new recordings were made by Pink Fairies, which appeared on two albums.
