Ty Segall (born June 8, 1987 in Laguna Beach , California ) is an American musician and songwriter . He sings and plays drums and guitar . He has released eight solo albums so far and is a member of the bands Fuzz , The Traditional Fools , Epsilons , Party Fowl , Sic Alps , The Perverts and the Ty Segall Band .

Career

Segall began his career as a part-time musician in various underground bands in Orange County and the San Francisco Bay area , before starting his solo career in 2008. He first played drums in a no-wave band before he switched to guitar with the Epsilons .

Segall's first solo release was the cassette Horn The Unicorn , appeared on the Wizard Mountain label (later of HBSP-2X on vinyl re-release). At the same time, Wizard Mountain also released a split cassette called Halfnonagon , which featured Segall and the band Superstitions .

Segall's next album, released in 2008 on Castle Face Records , was called Ty Segall . This was followed by a series of limited 7 "singles and a split LP with the band Black Time . The album Lemons was released on Goner Records in 2009 and received very good reviews. This was followed by a series of successful limited 7" singles and together with Mikal Cronin the LP Reverse Shark Attack .

In 2012 three albums were released : together with White Fence Hair , released in April; Slaughterhouse , recorded with his touring band, was released June 26th .; and a solo album, Twins , was released on October 9th. Two singles were released from this: The Hill and Would You Be My Love?

When asked about his sixth LP Twins , Segall said, " I want to do a total glam Stooges- meets- Hawkwind or Sabbath- thing like that. I think it would be great fun. I want to irritate people. I want one Make a really heavy record: bad, bad space rock . Add a little Satan and you have the sound. "

In 2013 Segall started a new project called Fuzz and released three 7 "singles. The Fuzz LP was recorded in May and released on In The Red Records on October 1, 2013. That same month, Segall announced the release of his new studio album Sleeper , which was released on August 20th (or on August 19th in the UK) on Drag City Records and received critical acclaim.

His new album "Manipulator" will be released on August 29, 2014.

Music style and equipment

Ty Segall's music often combines many different genres , e.g. B. garage rock , punk rock , psychedelic rock , noise rock and glam rock , but also heavy metal and classic rock . In interviews, Segall named Hawkwind as his favorite band. Glam rock artists like David Bowie and Marc Bolan had a huge influence on Segall's early career, as did hard rock and punk bands like Black Sabbath, KISS , The Stooges and Black Flag (especially the Ty Segall band). Over time, Segall's style became quieter, e.g. B. on the album Goodbye Bread and Sleeper , which has influences from Neil Young , the Byrds , the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band , the Beatles (Segall's voice has even been compared to John Lennon 's voice on some of his albums) and the early T. . Rex (when they were still called Tyrannosaurus Rex ). Great inspiration also comes from the garage and indie rock scene in San Francisco . Here Segall leads bands like Thee Oh Sees (he is friends with singer John Dwyer), Sic Alps and White Fence (Segall has already worked with both).

Ty Segall mainly uses Fender guitars with Fender amps. Well-known guitars that he has played are a Fender Jaguar (color: sunburst) and a Fender Mustang (color: seafoam green). Its main and sometimes only effects device is a Death-By-Audio-Fuzz-War- Pedal. In 2013, Death By Audio even made a reverberation pedal inspired and signed by Segall: the Death by Audio Sunshine Reverberation Pedal . Only 100 pieces were made.
