Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla (born August 29, 1986 in Vilnius ) is a Lithuanian orchestra conductor . In 2016 she caused a stir when she became chief conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra at the age of 29 .

stage name

In 2012 the conductor created her stage name by adding the hyphen and Tyla to her family name Gražinytė ; Tyla means silence in Lithuanian , also calm or silence .

Life

Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla grew up in a family of musicians. Her father Romualdas Gražinis (* 1962) is the choir conductor of the Vilnius Choir "Aidija" and teaches at the Lithuanian Music Academy and the Vilnius Seminary . Her mother Sigutė Gražinienė is a pianist . Her grandmother Beata Vasiliauskaitė-Šmidtienė (* 1941) is a violinist who taught at the Lithuanian Academy of Music .

Gražinytė-Tyla attended the 27th Vilnius Middle School (now Jonas Basanavičius High School) in Naujamiestis . There she had extended French lessons . At first she had art lessons, only later she switched to music and graduated from the Čiurlionis Art School , where she was trained as a choir conductor .

Professional background

education

After graduating from high school in 2004, Gražinytė-Tyla studied choir conducting and then orchestral conducting (in the bachelor's degree) at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz (Austria), at the Erasmus program at the Conservatory in Bologna , then at the Leipzig Music Academy with Ulrich Windfuhr and at the Zurich University of the Arts with Johannes Schläfli. Gražinytė-Tyla attended master classes with Herbert Blomstedt , David Zinman , Peter Gülke and Christian Ehwald.

After a seminar with Kurt Masur in Bonn , Gražinytė-Tyla worked as his assistant at the Orchester National de France . In 2009 Gražinytė-Tyla was accepted into the sponsorship of the Conductors' Forum of the German Music Council . In 2010 she made her operatic debut with La traviata at the Osnabrück Theater . In 2011/12 she worked as Second Kapellmeister at the Heidelberg Theater and Orchestra and in 2013/14 she moved to the Konzert Theater Bern as First Kapellmeister . From the 2015/16 season Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla was music director of the Salzburg State Theater until the end of the 2016/2017 season . In the United States , she worked with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in venues such as the Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl . She worked as an assistant conductor (2014/15 season) and as an associate conductor (2016/17) with the Los Angeles Philharmonic.

In September 2016 Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla became chief conductor of the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra , succeeding Andris Nelsons and Simon Rattle . This made her the first woman in this position and the third chief conductor of a major British orchestra.

As a guest conductor, she has been invited to numerous orchestras across Europe.
