In the preliminary round of the 2010 World Cup in Germany, the US women's U-20 national soccer team met in Group D against Ghana , Switzerland and South Korea . After a draw against Ghana at the beginning, the world champions of the U-20 World Cup in Chile 2008 were able to qualify for the quarter-finals with two wins.

Star striker Sydney Leroux (19) sealed her team's elimination on penalties
As group winners of group D, the USA met in the quarter-finals against group runners-up in group C , Nigeria . After a 1-1 draw after extra time, the team around Sydney Leroux , the top scorer and best player of 2008, failed on penalties at the Nigerian selection, as Nigerian goalkeeper Abala Jonathan held captain Christine Nairn's shot and Sydney Leroux finally shot over the goal .
