The Bundestag underground station is a station on line 55 of the Berlin U-Bahn , which opened on August 8, 2009. It is located in Berlin's government district in the district Tiergarten of the Mitte district , just before the Paul Löbe Building . The entrances to the station are on Otto-von-Bismarck-Allee and Paul-Löbe-Allee.

The underground hall covers 3,000 square meters and is eight meters high. This hall is divided by asymmetrically arranged columns. Only polished exposed concrete was used in the entire station area. There is no cladding of the walls or other decorations. The train station is partially illuminated with daylight that falls through glazed openings in the ceiling. In addition to stairs, it also has a lift to leave the central platform and is therefore barrier-free .

The distance to the Brandenburger Tor underground station is around 680 meters, and the Hauptbahnhof underground station is around 610 meters.

history

construction

As early as 1994, the shell of the station was built together with the construction of the Tiergarten tunnel as a preliminary work for a later subway line. The shell of the station, which was still planned as the Reichstag underground station at the time, was designed by the architect Axel Schultes , the architect of the Federal Chancellery .

Due to the acute financial shortage of the State of Berlin, construction was suspended for the line from Hauptbahnhof to Brandenburger Tor, but when the federal government demanded back the money it had already paid for this line, construction was resumed. The opening of the U55 had to be postponed to 2009 after problems with the sandy subsoil during the construction of the Brandenburger Tor underground station, the Bundestag and Hauptbahnhof underground stations had already been completed.

Directly above the train station, between the Federal Chancellery and Paul-Löbe-Haus, it was originally planned to set up a citizens' forum as part of the Federal Band . The side galleries of the train station were supposed to provide direct access to this citizens' forum, but are now largely unused.

Interim use

A performance in the train station (2008)

During the construction stop , the shell of the Bundestag station served as an event and film location . For example, a piece by the Neukölln Opera about Angela Merkel called Angela was premiered there . A National Opera (2002), a year later prominently attended mini gig by Robbie Williams during the premiere party of the US - animated film Finding Nemo (2003) and 2004 - also prominently occupied - the first German kart - racing underground for a distance of 640 meters. Parts of the horror - film production Resident Evil (2002) and the sci-fi movies Equilibrium (2002) and Aeon Flux (2005) were filmed there.

In April and May 2008, the completed train station was used as a venue for a production of Mozart's Magic Flute , directed by Christoph Hagel . From October 15 to November 16, 2008, the exhibition “World Machine” about the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) particle accelerator was shown in connection with Germany's role in the project.

opening

After the neighboring Brandenburg Gate station was completed in mid-2009, the BVG was able to start operating three stations between the main station and the Brandenburg Gate on August 8, 2009 - shortly before the 2009 World Athletics Championships . When the station opened, it only had one usable track; the second will only go into operation when the U5 line is extended from Alexanderplatz to the Brandenburg Gate at the end of 2020.

Surname

The station had different names during the planning and construction phase. For a long time it was included in plans called the Republic Square . When construction began, it was called the Reichstag , and this name was also used in publications until 2006. In 2006, however, the Bundestag's Council of Elders asked for the station to be named Bundestag or German Bundestag . The argument was that the German parliament was called Bundestag and no longer Reichstag and that the name would do better justice to the location, since the underground platform is not in front of the Reichstag building, but in front of the Paul Löbe House of the Bundestag.
