The Promise is a German TV film by Judith Kennel from 2016. It is the eleventh episode of the crime series Under Other Circumstances with Natalia Wörner in the lead role.

action

Commissioner Jana Winter wants to clear up the death of 15-year-old Nele, who was rescued lifeless from the loop . Since the girl was actually in a boarding school on the Danish island of Fejø , the inspector goes there and meets the Danish criminal inspector Malte Larssen, who is about to investigate the disappearance of another student, the Danish Liv. So they investigate together in the hope of finding the second girl still alive. There is a first clue to the boarding school student Liam. There is evidence that he followed Nele to Germany on the night of the crime. Jana Winter asks him, but doesn't get anywhere.

In Schleswig , however, inspector Matthias Hamm is investigating disc jockey Finn Reuter. It was because of him that Nele came to Germany from Denmark and had sex with him before she died. He is convicted of raping the girl, but denies her murder.

Jana Winter's investigation in Denmark shows that Nele very likely killed herself. She and her roommates had found out about safe ways of suicide through a suicide forum on the Internet. Everyone felt unloved and believed that no one would miss them. Liv also chose suicide.

Although the Commissioner finds out, she and her Danish colleague cannot prevent Nele's third friend Fenja from attempting suicide as well. Only then does Liam break his silence because he had promised the girls not to tell anyone about their plans.

Reviews

Roger Tell from Tittelbach.tv wrote: “Once a year Jana Winter goes on a murder hunt on ZDF: clever, calm, personable. […] Author Georgi lets the inspector look into human abysses, director Judith Kennel sends her on an emotional ascent and descent. A thriller in a quiet tone that leaves the viewer in a deadly sad state. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm also rated it positively and wrote: “The thriller, skilfully mixed with flashbacks and daydreams, is one of the strongest films in the series, the end is really tough. However, it is tricky: dangerous young people are presented with an almost seductive look. ”Conclusion:“ Daring story, cleverly staged. ”

Tilmann P. Gangloff wrote for Kino.de : “ Theodor Storm's poem 'Beginning of the End' is of a life-weary sadness that can hardly be put into words. The quoted line 'So strangely alien to you is the world' is the key to this eleventh film from the ZDF crime series 'Under other circumstances', which is more drama than crime thriller. [...] Since Goethe's 'Werther' we have known about the deadly fascination of such stories, [but] the quality of the film does not affect the quality of the film, especially since the plot [...] develops an unexpected complexity at the beginning after the obligatory corpse find. "

Heike Huperz from the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung saw a "gloomy case" in which "some things (...) are only hinted at, the essentials are not illuminated in the darkest corner of the soul". "The motive of non-understanding between the generations, however, catastrophes that are caused by silence, isolation and the inability to communicate, is the central motif of the film." Huperz emphasizes the portrayal of Martin Brambach: he again shows "in a less than gratifying role why he is one of the most popular actors on German television."

Focus.de said: “The new crime thriller is exciting because it cannot be foreseen. Again and again, flashbacks help the viewer to guess the background to the case. "
