The Secret of the Sisters is a German television film by Judith Kennel from 2018. It is the 14th episode of the crime series Under Other Circumstances with Natalia Wörner in the lead role.

action

The body of a young woman is found in a forest near Kiel . Securing the tracks is difficult because a pack of wild boars has devastated the victim and the site. The first clues are a caller who called last night because she had observed an act of violence. This leads Commissioner Jana Winter to a new development area on the outskirts of Kiel. The witness Katharina Seidel willingly gives information about everything that she had observed, but otherwise wants to be left alone. The new construction of her house and her family need all her time and attention. The Commissioner soon found the reason for Seidel's reluctance. Katharina Seidel is prostituting herself. She sees no other way of maintaining her three children, the sick husband and building the house. Her husband knows nothing about his wife's extra income and she does everything to ensure that it stays that way.

Commissioner Brauner and Winter's colleague Hamm are now following up another lead. A visiting card from the doctor couple Gerhard was found in the victim's scattered things. They recognize the young woman as their au pair Daria Ivancyk, who would no longer work for them, but would have moved to her friend Maik Leinemann. The man is known to investigators as a pimp and violent. Leinemann admits that he chastised Ivancyk a little now and then, but did not kill her. On the night of the crime, he would only have brought her to a private party organized by wholesaler Horst Steinberg to “buy” and then picked it up again. Research at Steinberg shows that not only Daria Ivancyk was invited to “look after” the male guests, but also Katharina Seidel. According to Steinberg, he had sent Ivancyk away after a short time because she was too heavily drugged and would not have been "able to work". A question to Katharina Seidel, however, shows that Steinberg is lying, because Seidel's call came from this house and there the girl was severely beaten. Since Steinberg does not voluntarily reveal his business partner, who was with Ivancyk on the night of the crime and who killed her by his beatings, research is carried out on Steinberg's most important customers. Before this leads to success, a catastrophe looms for the Seidels. At the party, Katharina recognized Thomas Reuss, her husband's former business partner, and later found out that he had been with Ivancyk. When she wants to meet him in a hotel, her husband, who had been suspicious for a while, secretly follows her. After Andreas Seidel sees the two of them together and learns from Reuss that his wife is going to prostitute herself, he kills Reuss in anger.

Reviews

Harald Keller from Tittelbach.tv wrote: “The assumption that our colleague Jana Winter could become the new head of the department arouses suspicion and resentment. Emotions and affects hinder the current investigation into the case of a murdered prostitute, but at the same time they also promote it. A clever balancing act. The fall is also an occasion to take up the moral decline behind bourgeois facades. Not with ostentatious outrage, but sober, but compassionate, even with bilious jokes. "

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best rating without comment (thumbs up).

At the FAZ Heike Hupertz wrote: “The director Judith Kennel sets [the] storyline, which escalates dramatically, realistically committed. Prostitution, glorified by some as self-determination, is not an ugly lower-class phenomenon, at least that is what the film shows in a sensitive way. "
