Im sinsteren Tal is a German television film by Judith Kennel from 2019. It is the 15th episode of the crime series Unter Otherbedingungen with Natalia Wörner in the lead role.

action

The previous head of the Schleswig homicide squad, Arne Brauner, retired to the mountains of Austria for his 57th birthday. In doing so, he wants to avoid personal humiliation at the same time, because his employee Jana Winter was appointed chief commissioner due to a tender, which he has not yet forgiven. Accordingly, he drowns his frustration in alcohol and in this state becomes the victim of an assassination attempt. As soon as he notices a person falling from a rock into the depths, he is shot at.

When Jana Winter got the news, she did not hesitate to go to Bad Gastein and help her colleague. Once there, she meets District Inspector Franz Robanegg, who is leading the investigation into the incident. Nobody can explain why Brauner was shot, but after a woman's corpse is found in the gorge, Jana Winter creates a connection. After some time, Brauner thinks he can remember seeing someone fall down. At first Robanegg is not very enthusiastic that the German commissioner is interfering in his work, but he accepts his fate and works with her. Jana does not hide the fact that Robanegg does not always tell her the whole truth. The reason for this can be found when Winter discovers that half the place seems to be related to each other and that Robanegg's wife is one of the suspects. She is the daughter of the hotel owner Peter Kroll, who, as a patriarch, is currently struggling to hand over the helm to the younger generation. Due to the steadily falling number of overnight stays, his son Georg plans to sell the hotel to an English investor. His father doesn't like that at all, especially since a current geological report on the current radon values in a mine tunnel in the region has greatly reduced the sales value of the property. As it now turns out, the dead woman from the mountains is a geologist whose husband carried out the radon measurements. Since he was bribed by the new investor to manipulate the values in such a way that he would have financial advantages when buying the hotel and his wife wanted to reveal this to Georg Kroll, with whom she was having an affair, geologist Thomas Ortlauer comes under suspicion. But it soon becomes clear that the woman did not drown in a mountain river, but in a swimming pool. This shifts the focus to the owners of the hotel and when Georg Kroll is found hanged, this appears to be an admission of guilt.

Feli Robanegg shoots her father with a hunting rifle out of anger at her father, whom she renounced years ago because of his violence and self-righteousness and whom she blames for her brother's suicide. She claims to have helped her brother dispose of the body. After the geologist had an unfortunate fall in the swimming pool, they wanted to disguise her death as an accident in the mountains. When Arne Brauner happened to be walking down the path during the night, she shot him.

Reviews

Harald Keller from Tittelbach.tv wrote: “High mountains instead of flat land, mountain streams instead of a sea view - the circumstances are actually completely different in the fifteenth film in the ZDF series, which bears this name: 'Under different circumstances'.” “Author André Georgi and Director Judith Kennel turn 'Im sinsteren Tal' into a subtly narrated family tragedy against the background of overgrown patriarchal structures. "

The critics of the TV magazine TV Spielfilm gave the best rating (thumbs up) and wrote: “Don't be stupid to show the lowland commissioner in a different environment. The case is not so engaging, but it shows Jana Winter as an empathetic, well observing investigator. "Conclusion:" Winter in the south: crime thriller with a fresh guest role. "
