Unteratz is a district of the town of Wasungen in the Schmalkalden-Meiningen district in Thuringia .

geography

Unteratz lies in the valley of the Katzabach, which is part of the Werra catchment area .

history

The place was first mentioned in 874 as Katza . It was the center of the Mark Katz mentioned in 852, which formed the core and starting point of the Friedelshausen center and from 1350 was identical to the Sand Office .

The first documentary mention is dated April 22, 1261. The place was in the Hennebergischen Amt Sand, which from 1680 belonged to the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen .

Settlement of the surrounding area began much earlier, because an old high path from Solz to Oberkatz and Aschenhausen was probably the prerequisite for a barrow field on the Köpfchen hill . These are early Iron Age burials. Also in the Bronze Age and later it was buried. The long tradition of burials also suggests a cult site.

Unteratz was persecuted by witches from 1611 to 1665 : four women got into witch trials and were burned.

On January 1, 2019, the municipality of Unterkatz was incorporated into the city of Wasungen. She belonged to the administrative community Wasungen-Amt Sand .
