history

The village was first mentioned in the year 874 , it is said to have originated from several manors. Presumably included the Katz places already in 1297 the Office of sand . Also around 1350 Oberkatz is counted as part of the Friedelshausen office or the Sand office.

In addition to the Counts of Henneberg , the following noble families had possessions in the area: the Marschalk von Marisfeld, the lords of Teufel, von Bratten, von Hohnberg, von Helba, von Buttlar , von Dietsch, von Strauch, von der Keer, von Herda and von Auerochs as well as the monasteries Frauenbreitungen and Sinnershausen . The "Wolfsburg" used to stand close to the place. It was rebuilt and fortified by Eberhard von der Keer in 1380, but it was destroyed by the princes in 1397 as a robber baron's castle. But when the von der Keer invaded the territory of the Bishop of Würzburg by force in 1412, Bishop Johann had this castle conquered by his mercenaries and destroyed again. It was later rebuilt and finally destroyed in the Peasants' War.

Oberkatz was persecuted by witches from 1617 to 1692: five women were tried in witch trials , two were executed, and one was expelled from the country. The first victim was Barbara, Georg Öhmel's wife in 1619.

From 1592 to 1829 Oberkatz was still part of the Sand Office, which from 1680 was in the Duchy of Saxony-Meiningen . The market law Oberkatz received in 1705 by the Meininger Duke Bernhard I. (Sachsen-Meiningen) . At that time cattle markets were held. From 1829 to 1869 the place belonged to the administrative office Wasungen, from 1869 to 1872 to the administrative office of Meiningen, then to the district of Meiningen , from 1952 to the district of Meiningen and since 1994 to the district of Schmalkalden-Meiningen.

On January 1, 2019, Oberkatz was incorporated into the city of Kaltennordheim together with six other locations of the Hohe Rhön administrative community . Oberkatz is the only part of Kaltennordheim that did not belong to the Eisenach district before 1950 .
