Urbano Cardinal Navarrete

Urbano Cardinal Navarrete Cortés SJ (born May 25, 1920 in Camarena de la Sierra in the province of Teruel , Aragon , † November 22, 2010 in Rome ) was a Spanish Catholic theologian and canon lawyer as well as a university professor and university rector .

Life

Urbano Navarrete joined the religious order of the Jesuits in the province of Aragon on June 20, 1937 and studied humanities at the Centro del Monasterio de Veruela in Saragossa, philosophy at the Jesuit Institute Quimic de Sarrià near Barcelona and theology at the Colegio Máximo de Oña in Burgos. He received the sacrament of ordination at the 1952 Eucharistic Congress in Barcelona . He then completed a doctorate in canon law at the Pontifical Gregorian Universityin Rome. After further postgraduate studies in the humanities, he taught at the Centro del Monasterio de Veruela .

In 1958 Navarrete became professor of canon law, in particular marriage law, at the Pontifical Gregorian University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Law from 1974 to 1980 and 1986 to 1995. Appointed by Pope John Paul II , he was rector of the Gregorian from 1980 to 1986 .

Navarrete advised the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith , the Congregation for the Causes of Saints , the Commission for the Reform of the Codex Iuris Canonici , for the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity and for the Apostolic Signature .

On November 24, 2007, Benedict XVI took him . as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Ponziano in the college of cardinals . Although cardinals should actually be bishops according to canon law, Navarrete was dispensed from this obligation by the Pope for reasons of age.

Urbano Navarrete has published over 150 scientific papers and works. In October 2007 a volume appeared in Madrid with his collected essays on canonical marriage law “Derecho matrimonial canónico. Evolución a la luz del Concilio Vaticano II " . Urbano Navarrete was awarded honorary doctorates from the Pontifical University of Salamanca (1994) and the Péter Pázmány Catholic University in Budapest (2000).
