Várong is a municipality in the far west of the county Tolna in southern Hungary . The place is an independent municipality with 164 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2009).

location

Várong lies near the highest point of the Outer Somogy. Only a few paths lead over the wooded ridge and Várong is exactly at the northern end of a road. The closest town is Igal in Somogy County (10 km), while administratively it falls under Dombóvár , a good 20 km away .

history

In the age of King Stephen I the Holy (Hungarian: Szent István), a post of the Royal Waregian Guard is mentioned for the first time in the valley in which Várong is located. The name Várong is said to be derived from this post. The name Várong is mentioned in a deed of donation in 1138, with which King Béla II gave the village to Dömös Abbey. During the Turkish occupation , Várong remained continuously inhabited. From 1563 to 1631 the village was evidently continuously inhabited, even under Turkish rule. In the time of the Kuruc -Aufstände but it was abandoned. In 1734 there was Várong again as an independent municipality. Várong has been in Somogy County since its inception. Between 1743 and 67 the border was cleared. So the location of the village was finally determined. In the period from 1750 to 1759 the baroque church was built, which was consecrated to Saint John Nepomuk in 1775 . In 1802 the Piarist Order returned to Várong and took possession of the canons' manor again. From then on, some of the residents earned their living on the estate. In the past few decades the village had to protect itself from population decline.

present

Today 148 people live in 91 houses in Várong. However, the figures do not allow any conclusions to be drawn about the number of residents per house, as many properties are owned by foreigners who only stay temporarily in Várong and are therefore not included in the statistics. See also tourism.

Várong is connected to the neighboring village of Lápafő by roads 65155 and 6507. From there on the well-developed country road 6517 and the national road 61 with the district town of Dombóvár. Public transport is connected with regular buses, which arrive at Várong as the final stop with nine bus parcels a week. The buses go to the main train station in Dombóvár.

tourism

Várong is a popular destination for village tourism. In addition to the aforementioned guesthouse in the local town hall, holiday homes are also available for rent. City dwellers from abroad in particular spend their vacation in Várong, according to Mayor Brunner, and not a few have even bought a house in the village. In the middle of the village there is a baroque church, on the edge of the forest are the vineyards , in nearby Igal and in Dombóvár- Gunaras there is a thermal bath . There is a signposted cycle route around Várong and neighboring towns .

Personalities

A well-known persona is Lajos Takács (1921–1985), who was born in Fő utca (main street) 17. Lajos Takács became known for his work as an ethnologist . As a farmer's son, he himself came from rural Hungarian culture, which he studied scientifically. A plaque on the house where he was born commemorates him.
