Valerian from Mikulicz

Valerian von Mikulicz (born May 18, 1855 in Czernowitz , Bukowina , † December 24, 1910 in Vienna ) was an Austrian officer and military historian . He was the brother of the surgeon Johann von Mikulicz .

Life

Promotions

Mikulicz attended the military college in St. Pölten and (with Karl Tersztyánszky von Nádas ) the Theresian Military Academy . In 1877 he came to the Imperial Infantry Regiment No. 20 (1769) . After graduating from the Imperial and Royal War School , he was transferred to the General Staff on November 1, 1883 . With the 17th Infantry Brigade in Prague he was involved in the preparations for the mobilization of the 8th Corps Command . From there he undertook customer trips to the Russian Empire . In 1887 he joined the 12th Infantry Division and the General Staff of the 1st Corps Command in Cracow .

Given his family background, he was transferred to the registry office on April 16, 1890 . His work as an expert on the “Polish question” was awarded the Military Merit Cross (Austria) three years later . From 1891 he was also a teacher of the Russian language . Transferred to Infantry Regiment No. 67 in Eperjes on October 22, 1896 . On November 1, 1893 he became Chief of Staff of the 24th Infantry Division in Przemyśl . On October 5, 1901, he was regimental commander of IR 67 in Eperjes. On April 19, 1905, before the usual four years had expired, he became the brigade commander of the 57th Infantry Brigade in Theresienstadt .

Seriously ill since 1907, in April 1908 he asked for a leave of absence, which was generously granted to him. As an invalid , he was dismissed with full honors on February 24, 1910. Ten months later he died at the age of 55.

Surname

When his Polish nobility was recognized by Franz Joseph I on December 14, 1897 , Valerian Mikulicz Ritter von Radecki did not want to be confused with the Radetzkys . The name Valerian Ritter von Mikulicz-Radecki therefore applied for was approved on October 10, 1901.

Mikulicz translated the three-volume book by Aleksandr Kazimirovich Puzyrewski about the Polish-Russian War of 1830/31 .
