Westerende is a district of the unified municipality Großheide in the East Frisian district of Aurich in Lower Saxony .

The scattered settlement is about ten kilometers east of the north . It covers an area of 6.9 square kilometers. The place name goes back to the location of the place west of Arle . For the first time the place is mentioned in 1420 as to Westerenstede . The current spelling has been in use since 1491. The district is divided into Terhalle, Schleen and Westerende, of which Terhalle is the oldest. Other towns and places to live in Westerende are Osterbrande (mentioned in 1645 as the Brande ), Kantjeburg (mentioned in 1812 as Kaantjeborg and 1852 as Kraanteburg ), Westerbrande (mentioned in 1719), Westerender Hammrich (mentioned in 1871) and Wirde (first recorded in 1843).

history

Former Westerende dairy.

The oldest evidence of the presence of humans are stone axes and urn shards that were found in the Brande area on the Heidendoom parcel . Terhalle is the oldest settlement in what is now the district. Westerende is an extension of Terhalle that was built before 1200. In 1839 the places Westerende, Terhalle and Schleen merged to form the municipality of Westerende. It initially belonged to the Bailiwick of Arle in the office of Berum and after the administrative reform of 1884 to the north district , which was incorporated into the Aurich district on August 1, 1977. A reorganization law dissolved the municipality of Westerende with effect from July 1, 1972 and united it with Arle , Berumerfehn , Großheide (Kernort, today Großheide-Mitte) and Menstede-Coldinne to form the new municipality of Großheide.

The largest employer in Westerende from 1919 on was a privately operated dairy . In the 1970s the company fell victim to the “dairy death”. Today the former dairy building with its chimney that can be seen from afar houses apartments and the "Großheide-Westerende cat sanctuary".

coat of arms

Blazon : In the blue field a golden wooden plow with a silver ploughshare , in the right upper corner accompanied by a golden six-pointed spur wheel .

The former municipality chose the coat of arms in 1963. The plow symbolizes agriculture . The spur wheel and the colors blue and gold show that the municipality belongs to the former rural district of Norden.

traffic

Westerende had a rail connection to the East Frisian Coast Railway , which ran from Emden via the north, Dornum, Wittmund, Jever and Sande to Wilhelmshaven. On the section Norden-Lütetsburg - Hage - Westerende - Dornum, which has been closed for regular local rail passenger transport and is officially run as a museum railway , special trips with historic railway vehicles take place on Sundays and public holidays during the summer season.
