Valkyrie is an American doom metal band from Harrisonburg , Virginia that was formed in 2002.

history

The band was formed in the summer of 2002 and consisted of singer and guitarist Jake Adams, bassist Eric Seaman and drummer Luke Shafer. With this line-up, a first demo was released in 2003, which contained five songs, including Wintry Plains , which was to be heard with a different arrangement twelve years later on the album Shadows . In 2004, Jake's brother Peter joined the cast as the second guitarist and singer. Shortly afterwards, the band recorded another demo on a local university radio station. After that Shafer left the cast and was replaced by Mike Hoke. This was followed by a demo called Sunlight Shines and a split release with VOG. In late 2004, Seaman and Hoke split from the band and were replaced by bassist Nick Crabill and drummer Nic McInturff. With this line-up, the self-titled debut album was recorded, which was released on Twin Earth Records and produced by Chris Kozlowski . In early 2006, Will Barry-Rec and Gary Isom joined the group as the new bass player and the new drummer, respectively. This line-up was followed by appearances at various festivals in the USA, such as the Emissions from the Monolith Fest in Austin , Texas , or the Stoner Hands of Doom Festival in Phoenix , Arizona . Isom then split again from the band in mid-2007, whereupon Warren Hawkins came on as a replacement. In 2008 the band's own label Noble Origins released their second album Man of Two Visions . At Kreation Records , a label from Seattle , the album and the debut album were re-released on record in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, Peter Adams also joined Baroness . In July 2010 the two albums were re-released as CD on Meteorcity Records . In March 2012, Alan Fary joined the line-up as bass player before a split release with Earthling was recorded and released the following year. In the summer of 2014, the third album Shadows was recorded under the direction of Sanford Parker . The release of the sound carrier took place in mid-2015.

style

laut.de wrote that the band plays Doom Metal, which ismixedwith typical hard rock of the 1970s and early sounds of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal . In addition, influences from Southern Rock are audible. Characteristic are also "[g] supple twin guitar runs" and the singing of Jake Adams, which is somewhat reminiscent of Danzig .

Frank Thießies from Metal Hammer stated in his review of Man of Two Visions that there are influences from Doom Metal, Classic Rock and Psychedelic Rock of the 1970s on the album . He was particularly impressed by the guitar work, which is reminiscent of Thin Lizzy and Iron Maiden . The album sounds hypnotic, rough and filigree, with the group relying on authenticity and atmosphere. In the same issue Thorsten Zahn also reported about the band and described the music as a mixture of stoner rock , classic riffs and elements from heavy metal . In an interview with him, Jake Adams stated that Man of Two Visions should initially be a concept album, but that there was a lack of money and time to do it properly. According to Zahn, the debut album was influenced by bands like Spirit Caravan or Place of Skulls , while Man of Two Visions was more oriented towards the Scorpions , UFO and Thin Lizzy.

Wolfgang Liu Kuhn especially recommended Shadows to fans of Thin Lizzy, Saint Vitus , Trouble , Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden . In an interview with him, Peter Adams stated that each member tries to bring his influences to bear. Overall, the band tries to create harmonies that are as memorable as possible. Michael Rensen had reviewed the album an issue earlier. The band then moves in a "triangle between twin lead guitars from Wishbone Ash , the comparatively lively Doom from Trouble and the creaky riff walls of the early Black Sabbath". The songs would also have similarities to works by Iron Maiden in the mid-1980s.
