As Elena and Stefan get a little closer at a nightly campfire party, Matt's sister Vicki is bitten by what they believe was an animal. In fact, it was Stefan's older brother Damon, who - like Stefan too - is a vampire and returned to Mystic Falls shortly afterwards . In contrast to Stefan, however, Damon feeds on human blood.

Meanwhile, at a parents' night out, Mr. Tanner makes Jenna feel like she has failed in trying to be a parent substitute for Jeremy. Meanwhile Elena and Damon meet for the first time in the Salvatores house. Damon immediately tells her surprising information about Stefan's past that confuses Elena. Meanwhile, Vicki also slowly remembers what happened to her in the forest.

Damon and Caroline suddenly appear during dinner. To protect Elena from Damon, Stefan gives her a necklace filled with verbena . During a football game, Damon attacks coach Mr Tanner and kills him in the process.

Elena and Stefan go to the city's annual founder festival organized by Tyler's parents. Vicky manages to get Tyler to go to the party with her because she refuses to go with Jeremy. Damon tells Elena the story of the Salvatores after Stefan tries to exclude Damon from his life. Damon also recovers an amber crystal from one of the historical artifacts in the Lockwood mansion. Meanwhile, Stefan uses Caroline to poison Damon. When Damon bites Caroline, he collapses. When Caroline wakes up, she finds the crystal and puts it in her pocket, not knowing what kind of powers it has. Stefan locks the weakened Damon in a cell in the basement of her house. Zach is supposed to guard him. The founding council, made up of Mayor Richard Lockwood (Tyler's father), Carol Lockwood (Tyler's mother), Sheriff Forbes (Caroline's mother) and reporter Logan Fell, have decided that the vampires have come back to Mystic Falls and they are the reason for all the attacks are. In order to eliminate this, they want to regain a compass that is in the possession of the Gilberts. At the end, you see Vicky walking into Jeremy's bedroom after an argument with Tyler.

As Damon grows weaker, Jeremy's and Vicky's relationship grows stronger. At the car wash organized by the school, Bonnie discovers more about her strength and decides to face them. Meanwhile, Logan's charm manages to have dinner at the Gilberts' house to wrap Jenna up, causing him to steal the compass. Elena learns from a stranger that Stefan looks terrifyingly similar to a man he knew from 1953 by the name of Stefan Salvatore. This leads Elena to ask Stefan who he really is. At the same time, Damon uses his connection with Caroline to break free, kill Zach, and later bite Vicki.

Stefan tells Elena about his and Damon's past with Katherine. In 1864 they were both in love with a woman named Katherine Pierce, who subsequently turned them both into vampires. Meanwhile, Damon spends his day with Vicki, locked in the Salvatore house. They drink each other's blood and he turns her into a vampire. Stefan finds out and tries to get Vicki to die instead of completing the transformation by drinking human blood. Logan uses the compass, which can track down vampires, and finds Stefan and Vicki in the forest. Logan shoots Stefan with a wooden bullet because he thinks Stefan was attacking Vicki. Damon saves Stefan by attacking Logan. Overwhelmed with hunger, Vicki bites and kills Logan, completing the transformation. Stefan tells Elena that Vicki is now a vampire and Elena decides to keep the secret, but not without ending her relationship with Stefan.

Stefan helps Vicki to fight her bloodlust, but cannot control it. When Caroline gives Bonnie her witch costume for the school Halloween party, she also gives her the amber-colored crystal that Damon stole at the founders' party. Later at the school's Halloween party, Vicki attacks Jeremy and Elena, forcing Stefan to pierce a stake in her heart that kills her. Stefan makes Elena swear not to tell so that neither Matt nor Jeremy learn the truth about Vicki. Elena is unable to comfort the grieving Jeremy and therefore asks Stefan to use his powers so that her brother cannot remember anything. When Stefan replies that he is not sure whether it will work 100%, Damon agrees to relieve Jeremy from his torments.

An old vampire friend of Stefan's shows up in Mystic Falls to celebrate his birthday with him: the 350-year-old Lexi. She shows Elena the true value of love and helps her to take the first step to build a new relationship with Stefan. At the same time, Jeremy stops using drugs and neglecting his homework after Damon steals his memory of Vicki's death. Elena asks Damon if he changed anything else about her brother, but all he tells her is that he released Jeremy from his torments. Damon gives Sheriff Forbes a box of verbena and she reveals to him all the vampire hunters in town without knowing what he is. He later blames Lexi for the death of a local boy when Damon changes his girlfriend's memory and determines her testimony. The police arrest Lexi. Outside the bar, Damon stakes Lexi, killing her before she can attack the sheriff or reveal his secret. Stefan is beside himself about what happened and says to Elena that she was right when she ended their relationship. Then he storms off and attacks Damon, but stops shortly before Damon dies. He spared Damon's life to pay off his debt when Damon saved him from Logan. When Bonnie wears the crystal, she has a nightmare and wakes up in the cemetery.

Jeremy notices that Alaric Saltzman - the new history teacher to replace the late Mr. Tanner - is wearing a strange ring that resembles the daylight rings worn by vampires. When Alaric and Jenna meet, it sparks between the two immediately. Since Bonnie keeps having dreams about her ancestor Emily, who was a witch, the girls decide to hold a séance . This backfires, however, and Emily's ghost takes hold of Bonnie. Meanwhile, Damon reveals to Stefan the reason for his return to Mystic Falls: He wants to free Katherine, with the help of the crystal she gave Emily before the vampires were locked in the crypt by the townspeople. Stefan tries to stop Damon because he fears that all the other vampires will also be set free. Since they were almost burned by the founding families at the time, they might want to take revenge on today's generation of city dwellers. Emily - in Bonnie's body - doesn't want Damon to free the vampires either, so she destroys the crystal. Damon feels betrayed by her and attacks Bonnie, even though Emily has already left her body. After Stefan rescues her, Elena tells her all about the vampires. Meanwhile, Matt and Caroline get closer. Surprisingly, Logan appears again - as a vampire - in Mystic Falls.

Jeremy decides to go back to his old hobby: drawing fantasy creatures, which he stopped when his parents died. Meanwhile, the vampire Logan attacks and kills some people from Mystic Falls. Matt and Caroline continue to meet. He tells Tyler that he loves hanging out with Caroline. Sheriff Forbes tells Damon about the latest recent attack, and he finds out that Logan doesn't know who turned him. After an argument with the sheriff, Logan kidnaps Caroline, but Damon and Stefan rescue her. Logan tells Damon that he knows another way to get Katherine back. Otherwise Elena confesses her love to Stefan and he decides to stay in Mystic Falls. Then the two sleep together. However, when Stefan goes briefly to get Elena something to drink, Elena discovers the photo of Katherine, sees that the two are exactly alike and abruptly leaves the house, leaving her verbena necklace and the photo behind. Alaric confronts Logan and tells him to stay away from Jenna. Logan tries to attack him, but he is impaled and dies. Elena gets into a car accident when she tries to avoid a man standing in the middle of the street, but realizes that the man must be more than human. The last scene shows the unknown man walking towards Elena's car while she screams.

Damon's appearance causes the stranger to flee and Damon frees Elena from her overturned car. Damon takes Elena to Georgia to see Bree, a witch and one of Damon's previous flames, in hopes that she will find a way to rescue Katherine from the crypt. However, Bree secretly notifies Lee, Lexi's boyfriend (since Bree was also a friend of Lexi's). He wants to take revenge on Damon for the murder of his girlfriend. Elena saves Damon, however, and Damon subsequently kills Bree immediately after telling him that he needs to find Emily's Grimoire . Back in Mystic Falls, Stefan opens up to Bonnie's grandmother to help Bonnie use her skills better. Meanwhile, Jeremy meets Anna, a young woman who knows the true past of Mystic Falls. When Elena and Damon return, Stefan confesses to Elena that he rescued her in the car accident that killed her parents. He also tells Elena that she was adopted. However, Stefan knows nothing of her birth parents. He holds on to his love for Elena and she forgives him. Alaric sits at the bar in the Mystic Grill and recognizes Damon as the vampire who killed his wife.

When Stefan and Damon try to find out who the new vampire is in town, Stefan gives Elena more verbena-filled jewelry to protect her friends and family. To make some money, Matt takes a clerk job at Mystic Grill, where former high school football star Ben also works as a bartender. Ben comes to Bonnie's help when he realizes Damon is molesting her. Damon and Stefan accompany Elena to a 1950s-themed school dance where Alaric introduces himself to Damon. The vampire who chased Elena is killed by Stefan and Damon. Before he dies, he reveals that the way to get into the tomb is described in Gilbert's diary. While Alaric and Jenna are walking home from the party, Alaric tells Jenna that his wife's name was Isobel, the same name as Elena's birth mother. Meanwhile, Anna continues to try to get closer to Jeremy so that she can get her hands on the Gilbert diary. In the end, it turns out that both Anna and Ben are vampires and have a romantic relationship with each other.

The episode begins with Damon and Katherine in 1864. Katherine stops a carriage, attacks and drinks from the people in it. Katherine and Damon kiss. The scene slowly disappears and starts with Damon disturbing Elena and Stefan in bed. Damon reminds them that they can trust him and then disappears. In flashbacks, Damon and Stefan recall the deeds of the townspeople, including their father, Giuseppe Salvatore, in causing dire incidents that rifted their relationship. In the present, Bonnie's date with Ben takes a terrifying turn when she learns that Ben is a vampire and he kidnapped her. Elena helps Stefan when he and Damon set out to find the diary that belonged to their ancestor. Stefan comes from behind Alaric's reason for being interested in both the diary and the city's history and that the way to get into the crypt is in the grimoire. Although Anna steals the diary before Stefan can get it from Alaric, Stefan got a photocopy from Alaric. Stefan and Elena go to Giuseppe Salvatore's grave to get Emily's magic book. It is revealed that Jeremy's friend Anna is the daughter of Pearl, one of the vampires trapped in the crypt under the rubble of old Fells Church. Damon takes the diary from Anna and goes to his father's grave. There he meets Elena and Stefan who have just pulled the grimoire out of the grave. Damon takes the book. Stefan brings Elena home and goes downstairs to get her an aspirin. There he finds out that Anna is with Jeremy. Stefan recognizes her name and runs upstairs, only to find that Elena is no longer there.

Elena wakes up in a motel to find that she and Bonnie are being held there by Anna. Elena uses this as leverage to force Bonnie to open the crypt. While Anna and Damon decide to work together to open the crypt in town, Ben guards Elena and Bonnie. The two are finally freed by Stefan, who threatens Ben to kill him if he doesn't leave town. Bonnie asks her grandmother if she would open the tomb with her so Anna can save her mother and Damon Katherine. Bonnie's grandmother finally agrees and the two of them open the crypt that evening. Anna is able to free her mother Pearl, but Damon finds out that Katherine was not locked in the crypt at all. Anna admits that she knew about it, and that Katherine just hasn't cared about him for all these years. Bonnie's grandmother Sheila is so weakened by the spell that she dies.

Jenna, who went in search of Elena's birth mother Isobel, finds out that her best friend Trudie Peters lives near Mysic Falls. Elena then visits Trudie to find out more about her birth parents. While the two are talking, Trudie gives Elena verbena tea, which Elena realizes that Trudie must know about the existence of vampires. When she asks Trudie about it, she throws them out of the house. Stefan finds out that Elena's mother, Isobel, was married to Alaric until she was killed a few years ago. Alaric tells him that Damon killed his wife back then. When Alaric wants to take revenge on Damon, he is killed by Damon. Meanwhile, Matt's flighty mother Kelly suddenly shows up, showing her dislike for Caroline. While Elena finds out that Isobel - at her own request - has been turned into a vampire by Damon, Alaric wakes up surprisingly from the dead in front of Stefan's eyes. He tells him that Isobel gave him a ring that will bring him back to life. Since the crypt was not properly closed again, the crypt vampires gradually manage to escape.

Pearl and Anna help the crypt vampires to cope in today's world. Pearl calls Jenna to get her old pharmacy back. Shortly before, they make a detour to Damon and tell him that they want to win Mystic Falls for themselves. When Damon tries to get in their way, Pearl injures Damon. Stefan, Elena, Matt and Caroline are on a double date. Elena is mistaken for Katherine by a crypt vampire. He attacks Stefan and Damon during the night. But when Stefan stakes Frederick's company, Fredericks escapes. Anna confesses to Jeremy that she is a vampire. Jeremy wants her to transform him.

The crypt vampires lie in wait for Stefan and take him prisoner, whereupon Elena and Damon ask Alaric for help. Meanwhile, Jeremy tries to get Anna to transform him, which she finally agrees to after some hesitation. Stefan is freed by Elena, while Damon can stake some crypt vampires. However, Stefan is kidnapped again and so weakened that Elena has to give him her blood. Strengthened by the human blood, Stefan can finally stake the crypt vampire and thus flee. Caroline finds Vicki's body and alerts the police. Jeremy explains to Anna that he only wanted to become a vampire because he wanted to be with Vicki.

There John provokes so much that Damon kills him. However, when John is alive shortly afterwards, Damon discovers that John is wearing a resuscitation ring.

Although John Gilbert knows that Stefan and Damon are vampires, he doesn't come out with the founders' council. In return, however, he expects Damon to help him obtain an invention of his ancestor Johnatan Gilberts, which is owned by Pearl. Damon receives the invention from her, but has no intention of giving it to John. While Elena and Caroline compete in the Miss Mystic Falls miss-vote, Bonnie avoids Elena. She blames the Salvatore brothers for her grandmother's death, and has problems with Elena being so close to them. Stefan can control his thirst for blood less and less and eventually almost kills one of the participants during the Miss election. Thereupon he is overwhelmed by Elena and Damon and locked in the basement of the Salvatore estate until he is himself again.

During his withdrawal, Stefan tells Elena how he and Damon became vampires back then: After they were shot by their own father while trying to free Katherine, the two woke up the next day in a transition stage to vampires, as Katherine had both in the weeks before let her blood drink. The two decide not to drink human blood, which would kill them within 24 hours. However, Stefan cannot resist his thirst for blood, turns into a vampire and shortly afterwards forces Damon, who no longer wants to live without Katherine - whom he considers dead - to drink human blood. Pearl decides that Mysic Falls has become too dangerous and wants to leave town with Anna. Anna refuses, however, as she is now in a relationship with Jeremy. Pearl decides to go alone but is killed with a wooden stake by John Gilbert before leaving.

Surprisingly, Isobel pays Alaric a visit and asks him to arrange a meeting with Elena for her. He is disappointed because she is cold and distant from him and only agrees when she threatens him. She is also dismissive towards Elena; she asks her to get Damon to let her do the invention that John is after. When Damon refuses, Isobel kidnaps Jeremy and threatens to kill him if she does not receive the invention. Bonny discovers that the invention - apparently a weapon that can kill vampires - was in fact created using magic by her ancestor Emily. She offers to render the weapon harmless before handing it over to Damon Isobel. In fact, she only pretends to want the Salvatore brothers - whom she blames for her grandmother's death - to die. The handover goes smoothly and it turns out that John and Isobel are working together for Katherine. Damon realizes that John is Elena's biological father when he learns that Isobel and John were a couple in high school.

The remaining crypt vampires are planning an attack on the city, which is to take place during the founding celebration festivities. However, the founding council knows about it and thwarts the plans for revenge with Johnathan Gilbert's weapon. This sends out a high-frequency signal that causes severe headaches in supernatural beings and puts them out of action for a few minutes. During this time the members of the founding council inject verbena all vampires and move them to an empty building where they are to be killed. While the gun is active, Caroline is badly injured in a car accident when Tyler - despite not being a vampire - gets a severe headache at the wheel of the car. With the help of Bonnie, Stefan frees Damon, who was caught by the founding council, from the building in which the vampires were held captive. Since this has meanwhile been set on fire by John, all the other vampires die - including Anna. Jeremy is devastated when he learns of her death and decides to transform into a vampire because he could then simply "switch off" his grief. He also drinks Anna's blood (which she had left him some of) and takes an overdose of painkillers. Meanwhile, Katherine - disguised as Elena - appears in Mysic Falls and attacks John.

The first broadcast of the second season was from September 9, 2010 to May 12, 2011 on the US broadcaster The CW . John survived his injury, and Jeremy didn't die from his overdose either. Since Caroline is so badly injured, Damon gives her some of his blood as this heals her. Since Tyler's father was also affected by Jonathan Gilbert's weapon, he was mistakenly mistaken for a vampire and killed along with them. Katherine is still in town pretending to be Elena. Stefan is mad at Damon for kissing Katherine believing it was Elena. After both Elena and Katherine have made it clear to Damon that they are not interested in him, but only in Stefan, he breaks Jeremy's neck in blind rage. But since he wears John's immortality ring, he survived the attack. After John is healed with Stefan's blood, he leaves town as Stefan threatened to turn him into a vampire if he stayed. Katherine visits Caroline in the hospital and suffocates her with a pillow to send a message to the Salvatore brothers.

Having Damon's blood in her body when she died, Caroline wakes up in the transition phase to become a vampire. Overwhelmed by a thirst for blood, she drinks several bottles of blood and eventually even bites a nurse. Damon tries to find out why the Lockwoods were affected by Johnathan Gilbert's weapon, noting that Tyler's uncle Mason Lockwood - who has stayed in Mystic Falls since his brother's funeral - is supernaturally strong. Caroline struggles to control her thirst for blood and kills a man while sucking his blood. When Damon learns she's a vampire, he wants to kill her, but Stefan stops him and shows Caroline how to control her cravings for blood.

Before Isobel asked Damon to turn her into a vampire, she was doing research on supernatural beings. Hoping for information about Katherine and the Lockwoods, Elena and Damon drive with Alaric to Duke University to see Isobel's research. Meanwhile, Stefan helps Caroline master her life as a vampire. Since Bonnie made a daylight ring for her, Caroline can now leave the house again during the day. Damon tries to regain Elena's friendship, but she can't forgive him for nearly killing Jeremy. Caroline momentarily loses control and bites Matt. She erases his memory, but since she is afraid she might hurt him again, she provokes an argument with him so that he breaks up with her. With Stefan's death, the Traveler's magic-destroying spell does not spread any further. Markos tracks down Julien and kills him as punishment for his betrayal, which also ends up Tyler on the other side. Bonnie and Enzo meanwhile prepare a spell that is supposed to bring the deceased back from the other side to this side, since the other side is about to collapse. To force the witch Liv to perform the spell, Caroline kills her brother Luke. For the magic, among other things, the death of many travelers is required, which is why Damon and Elena blow themselves up together with them. The magic succeeds, and so in addition to Enzo, Luke, Tyler, Elena and Stefan, Alaric also manages to return to the living.
