Van H. Vu
Van Ha Vu, Vietnamese Vũ Hà Văn, (* 1970 in Hanoi ) is a Vietnamese mathematician who deals with combinatorics , number theory and probability theory.
Life
Vu is the son of the poet Vu Quan Phuong, went to school in Hanoi and studied from 1989 at the Lorand Eötvös University in Budapest , where he obtained his degree in mathematics in 1994 from Tamás Szőnyi . He then went to Yale University , where he received his doctorate under László Lovász in 1998 (Embedding, Anti-Hadamard Matrices, Extremal Set Systems and Nibble Method). In 1998/99, 2005/06 and 2007 he was at the Institute for Advanced Study and from 1999 to 2001 at Microsoft Research . From 2001 he was Assistant Professor, from 2003 Associate Professor and from 2005 Professor at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). He has been a professor at Rutgers University since 2005 and has been a professor at Yale since 2011. In 2006 he was visiting professor at the University of Paris VI . He has also been a professor at the Institute of Mathematics in Hanoi since 2009.
In 2010 he and Terence Tao proved that the eigenvalues of random matrices (in the asymptotic limit of large matrices) are uniformly distributed on the unit circle . They performed the proof in the case of independent random variables for the n × n matrix elements with the same distribution function , vanishing mean and variance 1 / n. The proof had already been given under more limited conditions. With József Solymosi, he made a significant advance in the general case on the problem of different distances from Erdős .
In addition to random matrices, Vu deals with additive number theory and its connections to combinatorics (additive combinatorics).
He was a Sloan Fellow in 2002 and a Sloan Dissertation Fellow in 1997. In 2003 he received a Career Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF). In 2008 he received the George Pólya Prize for developing inequalities for the concentration of random polynomials. In 2012 he was awarded the Fulkerson Prize . In 2014 he was invited speaker at the ICM in Seoul (Combinatorial Problems in Random Matrix Theory).
In addition to being Vietnamese, Vu is also a US citizen.
