Warteres Warteressowitsch Samurgaschew ( Russian Вартерес Вартересович Самургашев , scientific transliteration Varteres Varteresovič Samurgašev ; born September 13, 1979 in Rostow-on-Don ) is a former Russian wrestler . In the Greco-Roman style, he became Olympic champion in 2000 and world champion two years later .

Career

Samurgashev started wrestling in 1994. Since 1995 he has been trained in Rostov by Sergei Sabejworota . Samurgaschew won his first title at the European Wrestling Championships in Moscow in 2000 . There he won the final of the featherweight , the weight class up to 63 kilograms, against the Swiss Beat Motzer with 8: 0.

At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney , he eliminated the 1996 Olympic champion Włodzimierz Zawadzki and the former world champion Şeref Eroğlu in the preliminary round . In the final, he prevailed 3-0 in extra time against the Cuban Juan Luis Marén and became Olympic champion.

Two years after his Olympic victory, Samurgaschew moved to a higher weight class. He also dominated his competition in welterweight and became world champion at the 2002 World Championships in Moscow . In the final he won after an exciting fight against the European champion Badri Chassaia from Georgia, to whom he was still defeated in the final of the European championships in April 2002.

At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , Samurgaschew initially prevailed in the preliminary round without major problems and eliminated the German champion and runner-up world champion Konstantin Schneider . After drawing a bye in the quarter-finals, he had to play in the semifinals against Aleksandr Doxturishvili, who started for Uzbekistan . After a few individual mistakes, he lost 2: 5 in the end.
