The municipal utility transport company Wilhelmshaven leads as transport companies to public transport with buses in Wilhelmshaven by. In addition to transport operations, the company is also responsible for the port operations of part of the Wilhelmshaven ports .

history

In 1937 the Verkehrsgesellschaft Wilhelmshaven mbH was founded as the successor company to the Wilhelmshaven-Rüstringer tram .

During the Second World War was on 1 October 1942, the O bus opened OPERATION. In the absence of civil industry, the city of Liège had to hand over seven trolleybuses to Wilhelmshaven. Tram operations ceased on March 30, 1945, and after the occupation of Wilhelmshaven on May 6, 1945, the British occupying forces took over the supervision of the omnibus and trolleybus traffic until March 31, 1947. The British initially viewed the transport company as a looted object and therefore rejected the city's applications for the transfer of all shares. The city therefore decided to lease the transport company. The transport company remained practically only as a corporation. Almost two years after the end of the war, the Wilhelmshaven transport company was founded as a municipal company on April 1, 1947 and incorporated into the Stadtwerke. It was founded by taking over the facilities and vehicles of Verkehrsgesellschaft mbH and leasing the omnisbus hall on Admiral-Klatt-Straße. The vehicles that were taken over were barely operational until the currency reform in 1948. Since there were very few rubber tires available, a large number of buses had to be leased to external private entrepreneurs who were better able to procure new tires. In 1949 ten Fiat trolleybuses had to be returned to Italy for restitution, although the population and the British protested against this. Ten new Henschel trolleybuses were purchased as replacements . In the same year, the transport company introduced trips to Hamburg , Hanover and Berlin .

From 1950 to 1952, the bus and trolleybus lines were expanded, the vehicle fleet was modernized and the timetables were optimized. On April 28, 1952, with the approval of the federal government, the entire share of the corporation was transferred free of charge to the city by the Lower Saxony finance minister. 1957 was Z connotations of core O mnisbus b ahnhof (ZOB) transferred from the market street on the former main post in front of the central station.

After the closure of the Pekol O-Bus line to Jever in 1954, municipal O-Bus operations in Wilhelmshaven were also stopped on October 30, 1960 because the transport of passengers with passenger trailers was prohibited. Therefore new buses had to be procured. In addition, the transport company had to start running the suburban railway , which was shut down in 1961. Therefore a new bus network was created. In 1970, the introduction of one-man traffic was completed, so that conductors no longer sold tickets on buses. Significant progress was made in 1986 with the purchase of the first handicapped-friendly low-floor bus from Neoplan . Since then, only low-floor buses have been procured.

In 1991 the bus routes to Fedderwarden and the West industrial area were discontinued. From the mid-1990s, additional low-floor buses were procured from Neoplan, including some articulated buses . On September 4, 1997 the new building of the main train station, which had been hoped for for decades, was inaugurated. A “Nordseepassage” shopping center and a new bus station with roofs that are similar to the one at the station were integrated. The Ems-Jade Transport Association (VEJ) was founded.

In the summer of 2000, in addition to the Expo in Hanover, there was the additional program “Expo am Meer” in Wilhelmshaven, where visitors were taken by borrowed buses, as the transport companies' vehicles were insufficient for the number of passengers. The first passenger forum took place on November 18, 2003. A Neoplan "Centroliner" was purchased as a demonstration vehicle in Bavaria. Another milestone in Wilhelmshaven's new transport history is the new line network from May 1, 2004, which significantly improves the connection between Fedderwardergroden and the city center. Among other things, this meant that the first low-floor buses from 1986 were retired. Priority circuits for buses have been installed at busy intersections since 2004. In the course of 2005 several stops were equipped with new bus platforms. In October 2005 two used Mercedes-Benz articulated buses were bought from Berlin. A change in demand means that passengers have a new route and a collective call taxi.

In October 2006 two used Neoplan articulated buses were bought from Baden-Baden , an older N 4018 articulated bus and an N 4014 city bus were sold. Due to the higher number of passengers, two Mercedes-Benz O 530 G Citaro articulated buses were purchased at the end of November 2007 .

Since May 31, 2008, hourly trips on bus line 6 have run from the Voslapp- Süd terminus of lines 1 and 6 to the JadeWeserPort container port that is currently under construction . For bus trips in the direction of JadeWeserPort, a new bus platform has been set up near the terminus, where normal courses don't stop, but end and turn around on the premises of the Marktkauf branch. The extension of the line is mainly for tourists who visit the info box and marvel at the construction work on the site.

Since autumn 2008 there has been a priority circuit for lines 3 and 4 on Peterstraße between Genossenschaftsstraße and Börsenstraße at all traffic lights, giving the buses a “ green wave ”. Lines 2 and 6 crossing Peterstrasse also benefit from priority privileges. With the priority circuit, which is automatically triggered by the bus via an infrared interface , the bus timetables should be adhered to better. The priority circuit is unpopular with car-driving citizens because it messes up the green wave for cars that previously existed on Peterstraße and especially in the area of the Kortekreuzung on Gökerstraße. Backlogs and longer waiting times for drivers at the traffic lights have been the result since then.

Port operations

Stadtwerke-Verkehrsgesellschaft Wilhelmshaven also operates the city port of Wilhelmshaven. This can be reached regardless of the tide 24 hours a day via a twin-chamber sea lock . The port has around 2500 meters of public quays for transshipment activities. There are also several smaller jetties for local traffic and pleasure craft.

Local transport

Line network

The route network of the transport companies has been changed several times since the end of the Second World War .

O-bus operation of the public transport company

The route Schaar - Hauptbahnhof - Maadebrücke existed since the opening of the trolleybus service in 1942. In 1958, the line from the Maadebrücke at Rüstersiel , which was also the station of the suburban railway, was expanded through Fedderwardergroden to Voslapp .

Pekol trolleybus operation

In 1944, the bus operator Theodor Pekol , who operated the trolleybus network in Oldenburg , opened the 18 km long overland route Wilhelmshaven Hauptbahnhof - Schaar - Jever with Oldenburg trolleybuses . After about ten years, operations were stopped again on September 30, 1954.

Bus network after 1960

The trolleybus lines were replaced by new omnibus lines, which now determined local transport in Wilhelmshaven in addition to the suburban railway, which would continue to run for a year.

Bus network before 1991

Before 1991, Fedderwarden was still connected to the shops in Fedderwardergroden and the industrial area-West on Bunsenstrasse to the city center. The numbers of some lines changed from one another in individual cases. So initially a line 4 already ran the oil port from the town hall. Line 5 was later created specifically for this route. There was also a line 13 and (curiously) a line 71 for a short time. The only line number that has never been assigned to this day was 9. Line 4 between Rustersiel and Coldewei was closed again after two years in 1985. As the successor to line 10, which existed between 1974 and 1982, the so-called Ruftaxilinie was operated between 1986 and 1988, which ran from Fedderwarden to Fedderwardergroden on call. It was discontinued due to low passenger numbers.

The revised route network (1991-2004)

Through the newly created Maadebogen district, line 3 drove a large loop through it to the Reinhard Nieter hospital and the city park colony, in order to get on the traditional route. In 2002, line 3 was split into two branches through the opening of a connecting road and the construction of the residential districts West and Maadetal. Since then, lines 31 and 32 ran from the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge to Banter Weg on a common section. The 31 connected the Ebkeriege business park and the new residential areas and drove to Maadebogen -Nord. The 32 traveled its traditional route via Jadeviertel, Europaviertel, Wiesenhof and Reinhard-Nieter-Krankenhaus to the Maadebogen-Nord stop. There the buses changed their line number and drove the other way back to the Kaiser Wilhelm Bridge . Until 2004 there was a 15-minute cycle on most lines.

Night network until 2004

Before the introduction of a new late-night service network in 2004, lines A and B operated on a linked route of lines 1, 2, 31, 32 and 6, 2, 31, 32 every hour until midnight from 8 p.m. and on Sundays and public holidays City of Wilhelmshaven.

Line network from May 1, 2004

On May 1, 2004, a newly revised bus network was put into operation.

Tact

Associated with this was the introduction of a 20-minute cycle on lines 1, 2 and 6. Due to the lower demand in the outskirts of the city, a 40-minute cycle was introduced on lines 3 and 4. Among other things, a single-line late, Sunday and public holiday service was introduced. In late traffic until midnight, lines 1 and 6 run every 20 minutes. Line 3 runs until 7 p.m. and line 4 runs until 10 p.m. every 40 minutes. On Sundays and public holidays, lines 1 and 6 run every 30 minutes until 11 p.m. The 2 and 4 ran every 30 minutes until 10 p.m.

Line course

Line 2 serves Heppens and the Inselviertel in a large counter-clockwise loop. To compensate for the fact that the Karl-Hinrichs-Stift retirement home has lost its stop, some trips on line 1 will be made via the former station of line 2. Furthermore, lines 31 and 32 were renamed 3 and 4 and took over the branch to Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße in Altengroden. The northern route through the Maadebogen was set up in favor of a new stop on line 6 next to the residential area. Line 6 has been running from Reinhard Nieter Hospital to Voslapp-Süd since then. From the main train station, it now continues to Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke. The passengers in Fedderwardergroden got a much better connection to the inner city.

Change of the network due to passenger demand

On July 9, 2006, due to strong demand, a 20-minute cycle was introduced on lines 3 to 7 p.m. and 4 to 8 p.m. With a 40-minute cycle, overlapping in several areas resulted in a 20-minute cycle. Line 3 from the Maadebogen is therefore led directly to the Reinhard-Nieter-Hospital, because the route to Johann-Sebastian-Bach-Straße does not warrant more frequent service. On lines 2 and 4, due to insufficient demand for the bus connection, a collective call taxi was set up from 8 p.m. that uses the same route and uses the prices of the transport companies. For tourist traffic, the Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke terminus was given the addition of Südstrand. The Robodesweg stop was given the addition of Sportforum to draw attention to the nearby sports forum with the “ Jadestadion ” football stadium , the “Nautimo” adventure pool and the “Nordfrost Arena” handball hall.

Lines 8 and 11

Line 8 is usually only operated between May 17 and September 30, every hour from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. It is relevant for tourism traffic to the south beach and the naval museum. Otherwise line 6 serves the south beach from the distant Kaiser-Wilhelm-Brücke stop.

Line 11 is operated every two hours on weekdays on behalf of the Fass-Reisen bus company between Wilhelmshaven - Sanderbusch - Wiesmoor . In 2002, two MAN low-floor buses were delivered especially for this purpose . Otherwise, Setra low-floor and high-floor buses are used.

Line network from September 1, 2010

As of September 1, 2010, further changes were made to the route network. These concern lines 2 and 3. Line 2 no longer ends in Heppens, but continues via Freiligrathstraße and Friedenstraße / Sportforum to the transfer point Reinhard-Nieter-Krankenhaus / FH. This means that the sports facilities in the Sportforum and the vocational schools in Friedenstrasse will be better connected. Line 3, on the other hand, is greatly shortened. According to the latest plans, the line that has previously led to the main train station (ZOB) ends in the Jadeviertel. The line changes of line 2 met with consistently positive reactions in the population. The changes to line 3 are viewed more critically, especially among parents whose schoolchildren have previously used line 3 to the secondary schools in the city.

Line network from October 1, 2017

Line 5 has been running between the 4th port entrance in the east of the city and the Ebkeriege barracks in the west of Wilhelmshaven since October 1, 2017. Line 5 existed until 2010, but was discontinued due to low demand. Due to the fact that the accommodation options at the naval base are limited and over 400 soldiers are currently housed in the Ebkeriege barracks, there was a need to resume regular operations. Line 5 therefore runs on weekdays between Kaserne Ebkeriege and 4th port entrance Hauptwache.
