Vermio ( modern Greek Βέρμιο ( n. Sg. ), Ancient Greek Βέρμιον Bermion , Slavic Каракамен ) is a mountain range in Greek Macedonia . It used to be called Doxa ( Δόξα ). It is located in the territory of the Imathia , Kozani and Pella Regional Divisions .

geography

The Vermio extends between the Eordea Plain  in Western Macedonia in the southwest and the Central Macedonian Plain to the northeast. The mountains are divided into two areas: the Negush Mountains (Slavic Негуш Планина Negusch Planina , after the old name of Naousa) in the north with the Chamitis ( Χαμίτης , 2052  m ) as the highest peak and the Durla or Turla (Slavic Дурла / Турла ) in the south. In the southeast, the Aliakmonas valley separates the Vermio from the adjacent Pieria massif. The valley of the Aliakmonas forms a gorge here (Greek Στενά του Αλιάκμονα Stena tou Aliakmona ), which is designated as a Natura 2000 protected area.

The municipalities that share the Vermio territory are Eordea in the southwest and Naousa and Veria in the plain in the northeast. The municipality of Vermio in the municipality of Eordea received the name of the mountain in 1997. The mountains surround a number of lakes, including the Vegoritida Sea in the northwest and the Agras reservoir in the north . Marble is quarried between Kastania (Eordea) and Georgiani in the south.

The Greek highway 2 from Polymylo Kozanis to Veria runs along the south-eastern slope in the valley of the Aliakmonas along the ancient Via Egnatia . The route leads through 15 tunnels (the longest at 2.2 km) and over six bridges.

flora

The wooded slopes are rich in fir , chestnut , strawberry , beech , pine and holm oak . Fruit is grown on the lower slopes, especially peaches , apples and cherries . The high mountain regions have a species-rich mountain flora with several types of orchids and gentians . Another characteristic is the Steinbrechart Saxifraga federici-augusti.

history

The place Marousia ( Μαρούσια ) was destroyed in 1822 by Ottoman troops. The church is the last monument to remember him. The place Agios Athanasios Tormanis or Toplianis ( Άγιος Αθανάσιος Τορμάνης ή Τόπλιανη ) had a similar experience .
