Viktor Mayer-Schönberger (* 1966 in Zell am See ) is an Austrian legal scholar .
Life
The son of a cinema owner and a tax advisor was born in Zell am See in 1966. After attending elementary school and a federal high school in his place of birth, he studied law for seven semesters at the University of Salzburg . During this time he was already successful in the International Physics Olympiad and in the Austrian competition for young programmers. After completing a master's degree at Harvard Law School , he obtained his doctorate in law in Salzburg in 1991. In 1992 he graduated with a Master of Science degree from the London School of Economics and Political Science in London .
In 1986 he founded the software company Ikarus with a focus on data security and developed Virus Utilities, one of the best- selling Austrian software products. In 1992 he sold the company. He then ran his father's tax consultancy firm for two years.
From 1994 Mayer-Schönberger worked at the Austrian Institute for European Legal Policy in Salzburg, where he headed the information law project, and from 1996 as an assistant at the Law Faculty of the University of Vienna . In 1999 he took over a professorship at the Harvard Kennedy School . He achieved his habilitation in 2001 at the University of Graz .
Mayer-Schönberger is currently working at the Oxford Internet Institute . He advises companies, governments and international organizations, among others.
Mayer-Schönberger propagates the right to be forgotten . He is currently working on the social consequences of using big data .
In August 2018, Mayer-Schönberger was appointed to the newly founded 10-member Digital Council of the German Federal Government.
