Ijad Madisch (* 1980 in Wolfsburg ) is a German virologist , founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of the research network ResearchGate and a member of the digital council of the German federal government .

Life

Ijad Madisch was born in Wolfsburg as the child of a family who immigrated to Germany from Syria . He is the brother of the later chief physician at the Siloah Hospital in Hanover, Ahmed Madisch .

Ijad Madisch passed his Abitur in 2000 in Celle at the Ernestinum Celle .

Ijad Madisch plays semi-professionally beach volleyball . Since 2019 his partner has been the former German international Finn Dittelbach . From 2016–2018 he played with Steffen Drößler , with whom he made it into the German DVV rankings for the first time in 2016 .

From 2000 to 2007 Ijad Madisch studied at the Hannover Medical School (MHH) and worked as a scholarship holder in the USA at the Massachusetts General Hospital , Boston of the Harvard Medical School . For a while at the same time, he went through a computer science course at the Fernuniversität Hagen , which he did not complete.

In 2007, Madisch received his doctorate at the MHH for a thesis in the field of virology with Summa cum Laude under the title Molecular Phylogeny and Bioinformatic Analyzes as the basis for the typing of human adenoviruses and for the design of organ-specific adenoviral gene therapy vectors and received the doctoral prize of the medical school Hanover .

After completing his studies, Madisch initially wanted to work in research in Hanover under Professor Michael Manns , who works at the MHH . But then he went back to the USA to work again from 2008 to 2010 at the Massachusetts General Hospital , Boston , the Harvard Medical School as a postdoc. During this time Madisch won the Young Investigator Prize of the Radiological Society of North America in Chicago for the project "High-resolution volume CT imaging of tissue-engineered bone growth: correlation between imaging, bio-mechanical strength and protein transcription analysis".

The main reason for his move to the United States was the desire that in 2008 then opened social network specifically to set up for scientists to share their research projects and results, the Research gate . He has also headed the digital platform full-time as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) since 2010 .

After a telephone request from German Chancellor Angela Merkel and a period to think about it, Ijad Madisch started his new work in Germany on August 22, 2018 as a member of the 10-member Digital Council of the Federal Government.

In August 2018 explained Madisch the topic "digital foundation in Germany" as his main concern in Digitalrat: The aim is not only more Internet start-ups funded, "but any kind are digitally thought of founding."

Ijad Madisch has received several awards for founding Researchgate , such as As with the German Founder's Award , German entrepreneur award , Time Magazine as a Next Generation Leader.
