Church "La Collegiale Notre Dame de l'Assomption"

Bell tower of Villemaur-sur-Vanne

Notre Dame de l'Assomption means Assumption of Mary . The former collegiate church of the 12th and 13th centuries, which was rebuilt after a fire in the 16th and 17th centuries, is interesting in terms of art history: On the one hand, it has a four-tiered bell tower, which was built from wood in 1551 and separated from the church is completely clad with chestnut shingles; on the other hand, the church hides a wooden lettuce between the choir and nave, the only one of its kind in France, created in 1521 by the woodcarver brothers Thomas and Jacques Guyon . The balustrade of the tribune resting on narrow, openwork pilasters , on which clerics used to perform liturgical chants, is adorned with 26 high relief panels, which show the Passion and Resurrection of Jesus on the west side on 15 panels and the life of Mary on 11 panels on the east side , created after graphic templates by Martin Schongauer and Albrecht Dürer . A crucifixion group in full round design complete the complex. - In the church there are other works of art, such as a rose branch Madonna (around 1490–1510) and a figure of St. Flavit von Marcilly (around 1515–30), both stone sculptures.
